Each installment of this series brings a real question from a recruiter or HR practitioner straight to the JobTarget product team.
Q: We have a niche job, but it seems to be reaching a more general audience. For example, a Residential Manager in the DD care industry, not just general management or administrative oversight. How do we reach that audience through Programmatic? We keep getting generic managerial applications for a role that's actually complex and specific to the care industry.
A: This comes up a lot, and it makes sense why. A title like "Residential Manager" reads as a general management role to most of the internet, even though the job itself is highly specific. The fix starts with how the job is built, not with the distribution itself.
The first place to look is your job title. If the title alone could apply to warehouse operations, retail, or general administrative work, that is exactly the audience it is going to attract. Working the specific industry and function into the title, rather than relying on a generic management label, gives the system more to work with when it is deciding who to show the job to.
The second place is the top of the job description. Your must-have requirements and relevant experience need to be front-loaded, not buried a few paragraphs in. The further a candidate has to scroll before hitting the qualifications that actually matter for this role, the more likely that information gets missed entirely, by both the candidate and the matching process.
Does Programmatic account for niche audiences directly?
Yes, where the network supports it. If there is a niche site relevant to your industry, Programmatic will work to get your job placed there as part of its normal distribution and optimization process. But that placement works alongside the job title and description, not instead of them. The system is reading the same signals a candidate would, so specificity in the posting itself directly shapes who it reaches.
What if title and description changes aren't enough on their own?
For a role this specific, programmatic advertising often works best as one piece of a broader approach rather than the only lever. Pairing distribution with sourcing can help you get in front of passive candidates who match the role's specific requirements rather than waiting for them to apply. Your relationship manager can also walk through options like additional advertising channels depending on where your candidate pool actually lives.
Where to start
Bring the job description to your relationship manager and go through it together. That conversation, starting with the title and the first few lines of the description, is typically where the biggest shift in applicant quality happens. It is a more direct fix than adjusting the budget or distribution settings on their own.
