GIS Specialist

Dexter, MI – Great Lakes/Atlantic Region

Ducks Unlimited–Michigan seeks a full-time GIS Specialist to join the Great Lakes/Atlantic Region geospatial team in Dexter, Michigan. This position will support updates to the U.S. National Wetlands Inventory (NWI), develop GIS data and maps for conservation projects, and collaborate with internal staff and external partners. The successful candidate will bring experience with NWI projects, strong GIS technical skills, and excellent communication and time-management abilities to help advance wetland conservation through geospatial science.

Office Work: The successful candidate will work in the Dexter, Michigan office.

Field Work: The successful candidate will be willing to travel for project-related fieldwork, partner meetings, and conferences. Travel less than 10% of overall work.

Responsibilities:

  • GIS data development for the National Wetland Inventory and other projects as needed.
  • Data management including data archiving, quality assurance, and control.
  • Generate maps for publications, posters, reports, PowerPoint presentations, and other internal and external communication needs.
  • Build and maintain relationships with team members, stakeholders, and partners in calls, emails, meetings, and presentations.
  • Assist in training GIS technicians in photointerpretation and other tasks as needed.
  • Clearly write up methods, results, and status updates for reports and other communications.

Required Experience and Education:

  • At least one year’s experience performing photointerpretation for a National Wetland Inventory project.
  • Bachelor’s degree in geography, natural resources and/or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience in GIS and remote sensing.
  • Prior field work including identification of wetland plants.

Required Communication and Interpersonal Skills:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain productive relationships with team members and partners.
  • Strong listening skills and ability to communicate technical information clearly to varied audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to exercise sound independent judgment.

Required Technological Proficiency:

  • Proficient with ArcGIS Pro, including editing, imagery, analysis, and cartography tools.
  • Ability to query and compile common data formats, including tabular, vector, imagery, and LiDAR data.
  • Experience with ArcGIS Online preferred.

Required Analytical Skills:

  • Experience classifying wetlands and deepwater habitats using aerial imagery and the Cowardin classification system.
