Senior Director, Actuarial Science

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Director, Actuarial Science based in the United States.

This is a senior leadership opportunity for an actuarial professional who can shape strategy, strengthen financial performance, and turn complex data into actionable business insights. The role leads actuarial direction across pricing, forecasting, financial analysis, modeling, and performance management. You will guide a team of actuaries while fostering technical excellence, mentorship, and professional development. The position also serves as a senior-level advisor to Finance, Legal, Compliance, Government Affairs, and other business functions. You will help navigate evolving healthcare regulations and engage with regulators and external stakeholders on critical policy matters. This role offers significant influence over business decisions, operational efficiency, affordability, and long-term organizational performance.

Accountabilities:
  • Set the strategic direction for actuarial science and translate business objectives into actionable strategies, processes, and analytical priorities.
  • Lead pricing, forecasting, month-end close, performance monitoring, financial experience analysis, trend evaluation, accruals, IBNR, and comparisons against budgets and reforecasts.
  • Develop and oversee statistical and financial models supporting bid pricing, financial projections, contract modeling, strategic initiatives, and ad hoc business needs.
  • Lead, develop, mentor, and motivate a team of actuaries and analysts while ensuring adherence to applicable Actuarial Standards of Practice.
  • Establish accountability across internal stakeholders for actuarial inputs and assumptions used throughout Finance and the broader organization.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, affordability, financial performance, and cross-functional execution through actuarial insights.
  • Oversee the integrity and completion of applicable federal and state rate filings and provide actuarial guidance for regulatory requirements.
  • Act as a senior-level advisor on actuarial concepts, business drivers, proposed legislation, regulations, and sub-regulatory guidance.
  • Engage with regulators, trade associations, government affairs teams, and other external stakeholders to provide actuarial perspectives on policy, advocacy, and business positioning.
  • Support business development initiatives and lead new-business projects when requested, providing senior-level actuarial expertise.
  • Partner with Business, Finance, Legal, Compliance, Government Affairs, and other functions to assess policy and regulatory impacts and develop informed organizational responses.
  • Monitor industry developments and translate emerging trends, regulations, and market dynamics into strategic recommendations.
  • Oversee mentorship and development programs for analysts while promoting a collaborative, high-performance culture.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Economics, or a related discipline.
  • At least 10 years of actuarial, financial analysis, or decision-support experience, with healthcare or managed-care experience strongly preferred.
  • At least 5 years of management experience, preferably leading actuarial teams and developing technical talent.
  • Associate of the Society of Actuaries (ASA) designation required; Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) preferred.
  • Strong expertise in actuarial modeling, pricing, forecasting, financial analysis, trend evaluation, and business performance management.
  • Advanced knowledge of data and analytical tools such as SQL, SAS, R, or other data manipulation platforms; strong SAS or Access experience is preferred.
  • Expert proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Strong understanding of healthcare regulations, actuarial standards, financial drivers, and regulatory environments is highly valuable.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex actuarial concepts to senior leaders and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, analytical, interpersonal, and decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage, motivate, mentor, and develop high-performing teams.
  • Ability to build trusted relationships and influence stakeholders across all levels of an organization as well as external partners.
  • Strong business judgment, attention to detail, and ability to translate data into practical recommendations and measurable outcomes.
  • Ability to identify problems, develop processes, lead implementation, and clearly communicate progress and results.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally, up to approximately 15% based on business needs.
