Job Description

Disability Claims & Underwriting Specialist

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Disability Claims & Underwriting Specialist based in Canada.

This role offers an opportunity to bring deep disability insurance expertise into the development of next-generation AI systems.
You will design realistic claims and underwriting scenarios that reflect the complexity of real-world disability decisions.
Your expertise will help evaluate AI-generated outputs against established professional standards and defensible reasoning.
The work spans disability definitions, medical and vocational evidence, benefit entitlement, and risk selection.
You will create high-quality reference materials, identify reasoning gaps, and provide structured feedback to improve model performance.
The role is well suited to experienced claims, underwriting, vocational rehabilitation, and absence-management professionals who enjoy analytical work.
You will collaborate with a research team through onboarding, calibration sessions, and ongoing expert evaluation.

Accountabilities:
  • Design realistic short- and long-term disability claims and underwriting scenarios covering elimination periods, own-occupation and any-occupation definitions, residual and partial disability, offsets, recurrent disability, and claim duration.
  • Develop professional work products such as claim determinations, benefit calculations, medical and vocational evidence summaries, transferable-skills analyses, return-to-work plans, and appeal decisions.
  • Produce high-quality “golden” reference responses that reflect experienced disability-professional judgment and industry standards.
  • Evaluate AI-generated responses using structured criteria covering definitional accuracy, evidentiary support, benefit calculations, procedural fairness, and quality of rationale.
  • Identify incorrect or unsupported disability determinations, missed offsets, inaccurate benefit calculations, inappropriate functional conclusions, and gaps in administrative documentation.
  • Provide clear written feedback to research teams to help improve AI reasoning, accuracy, and consistency in disability-related scenarios.
  • Participate in onboarding, office hours, calibration sessions, and other activities designed to maintain consistency and quality across expert evaluations.
  • Apply sound professional judgment while clearly distinguishing insurance claim adjudication from treating-provider clinical decisions and formal legal advice.
Requirements
  • At least 2 years of professional experience in disability claims adjudication, disability underwriting, vocational rehabilitation, or leave and absence management.
  • Experience with at least one disability program, such as group short-term disability, group long-term disability, individual disability income, statutory disability, or life waiver of premium.
  • Strong understanding of how contract definitions, elimination periods, offsets, pre-existing-condition provisions, and maximum benefit periods affect entitlement and claim duration.
  • Ability to assess medical, occupational, vocational, and financial evidence and develop defensible determinations supported by clearly documented reasoning.
  • Excellent written analytical skills, balanced professional judgment, and strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to distinguish appropriately between insurance adjudication, clinical assessment, and legal interpretation.
  • Experience with ERISA administrative records, appeals, or litigation support is an advantage.
  • Individual disability income underwriting experience, including occupation classification and financial underwriting, is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Social Security, workers’ compensation, or other-income offset coordination is beneficial.
  • Experience with FMLA, state leave programs, or ADA accommodation interactions is desirable.
  • Professional credentials such as CRC, CDMS, CCM, CPDM, RN, or a comparable clinical or vocational qualification are valued.
Benefits
  • Flexible remote opportunity with the ability to work from Canada.
  • Minimum commitment of 20 hours per week, with 40+ hours per week preferred.
  • Opportunity to contribute to the training and evaluation of advanced AI systems using specialized insurance expertise.
  • Meaningful project-based work where professional judgment directly influences AI model quality.
  • Immediate start, with applications reviewed on a rolling basis.
  • Referral opportunity offering up to $250 for each successful referral, subject to applicable restrictions.
