Position Summary:

Upward Bound is a pre-collegiate program. The Project Advisor provides academic advising, college and career counseling, study skills workshops, and oversees tutoring at specific target high schools to ensure program participants are served and enroll in institutions of post-secondary education. Upward Bound is grant funded through the U.S. Department of Education. This position is contingent on the renewal of grant funds.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the recruiting and selection of new Upward Bound participants
  • Enter and maintain database used by Upward Bound program, and aid in maintaining accurate student records
  • Visit target schools weekly to support Upward Bound participants with tutoring and academic strategies
  • Perform regular grade, attendance, and coursework submission checks on participants
  • Assist Program Manager with administrative duties, such as data entry, purchasing, annual reporting
  • Attend, plan and lead Saturday programs during Fall and Spring semesters (one per month)
  • Plan and help lead an annual six-week intensive Summer Academic Program for Upward Bound participants
  • Accompany Upward Bound participants to visit college and university campuses
  • Assist participants with completing college admission, scholarship and financial aid applications
  • Counsel participants regarding college-going activities


Minimum Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field(s) (education, psychology, sociology)
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of the population served
  • Valid Texas driver’s license
  • Ability to drive a 15-passenger van
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Have outstanding computer skills
  • Occasional extended work hours to include nights and weekends as required
  • Have good basic reading, math, and English skills
  • Knowledge of Educational Grants and grant writing experience is preferred
  • Working knowledge of advising, admissions policies, FAFSA, ApplyTexas application(s) preferred
  • Familiar with database entry

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
  • No or very limited physical effort required; however, the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Ability to drive a 15-passenger van

All full-time positions are located in Kilgore, TX. No fully work from home positions are available at this time. All employees must be available to physically present to work on the Kilgore, TX or Longview, TX Campus. Some Part-Time and Adjunct positions may be offsite but the candidate MUST live in the State of Texas.

Positions will remain open until filled. Some Adjunct and Part-Time teaching positions may remain open perpetually as the need for part time instructors fluctuates with student enrollment.
