Job Description

Senior Engineering Manager

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Engineering Manager based in Canada.

This role offers the opportunity to lead a talented engineering team building advanced AI-powered systems for scientific discovery.
You will guide engineers through complex technical challenges while collaborating with researchers, scientists, and product teams.
The position combines engineering leadership, architecture, team development, and hands-on technical contribution.
You will help transform ambitious research concepts into reliable, scalable, and impactful products.
This is an ideal opportunity for a leader who thrives in environments where problems are complex, uncertain, and intellectually challenging.
You will shape engineering practices, technical strategy, and the collaboration model between research and engineering disciplines.
The role provides the chance to contribute to pioneering work at the intersection of AI, science, and technology.

Accountabilities:

As a Senior Engineering Manager, you will lead a team of engineers responsible for developing core capabilities within an advanced AI research platform. You will create alignment between engineering, research, and product teams, ensuring experimental ideas evolve into robust systems while maintaining technical excellence and operational reliability.

  • Manage, mentor, and develop a team of four to six engineers, fostering growth, accountability, and high performance.
  • Build and lead multidisciplinary teams that bring together engineering, AI research, scientific, infrastructure, and product expertise.
  • Translate open-ended research objectives into clear technical strategies, milestones, and scalable solutions.
  • Partner with researchers and domain experts to move ideas from early exploration through implementation and production.
  • Create effective collaboration models that allow researchers to contribute prototypes, algorithms, evaluations, and specialized knowledge.
  • Guide architecture decisions, technical standards, system design, and major engineering initiatives.
  • Establish clear ownership models and decision-making processes across teams and reporting structures.
  • Balance innovation speed with reliability, maintainability, security, cost efficiency, and operational excellence.
  • Strengthen engineering practices around testing, evaluation, observability, documentation, deployment, and ownership.
  • Stay engaged with technical challenges through design reviews, problem solving, and direct contribution when valuable.
  • Influence broader engineering strategy, hiring decisions, organizational design, and technical culture.
Requirements:

The ideal candidate is an experienced engineering leader with a strong technical foundation and a passion for building teams that solve complex problems. You should be comfortable operating in ambiguous environments, collaborating across disciplines, and turning innovative ideas into dependable products.

  • Significant professional software engineering experience building complex technical systems.
  • Proven experience managing and developing high-performing engineering teams.
  • Ability to improve team velocity, accountability, and delivery while maintaining sustainable engineering practices.
  • Strong technical judgment across architecture, implementation, and production operations.
  • Experience making effective decisions in environments where requirements, solutions, and delivery paths are evolving.
  • Experience leading cross-functional or matrixed teams without relying solely on direct reporting structures.
  • Demonstrated ability to transform prototypes or exploratory concepts into scalable, maintainable systems.
  • Strong communication, facilitation, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Ability to build trust and shared understanding between engineering teams and research-focused disciplines.
  • Scientific curiosity and willingness to learn from experts in specialized domains.
  • Pragmatic, collaborative, and low-ego leadership style focused on evidence and outcomes.
  • Comfort working remotely with distributed teams across multiple locations.
  • Experience with AI, machine learning, agentic systems, simulation, scientific computing, research infrastructure, distributed systems, or cloud platforms is highly valuable.
  • Experience bringing research-driven technology into production environments is a strong asset.
Benefits:
  • Fully remote position based in Canada with flexibility to work in a distributed environment.
  • Opportunity to lead engineering efforts focused on advancing AI and scientific discovery.
  • Work alongside engineers, researchers, and technical experts solving complex, open-ended challenges.
  • High-impact role with significant influence on engineering strategy, culture, and product development.
  • Opportunity to shape how AI systems are built, evaluated, and applied to scientific research.
  • Collaborative environment that values curiosity, experimentation, and thoughtful problem-solving.
  • Professional growth opportunities through exposure to cutting-edge technologies and multidisciplinary work.
