Software Development Manager, Observability Platform

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Software Development Manager, Observability Platform based in Canada.

This is a leadership opportunity for an experienced engineering manager to build and shape a foundational observability platform from the ground up.
You will lead a high-impact team responsible for making complex production systems more transparent, reliable, and actionable for engineers and AI-driven workflows.
The role combines people leadership, technical strategy, and hands-on architecture to define the future of telemetry, monitoring, and reliability practices.
You will establish scalable solutions using modern observability standards, improve engineering velocity, and help teams make faster, better-informed decisions.
Working across engineering functions, you will influence platform direction, operational excellence, and the evolution of internal developer experiences.
This remote role offers the opportunity to solve complex technical challenges in a collaborative, innovative environment while building long-term impact.

Accountabilities:

As the Software Development Manager, Observability Platform, you will own the vision, strategy, and execution of a critical engineering platform that improves how teams understand and operate their systems. You will combine technical expertise with strong leadership skills to build a high-performing team, establish scalable observability practices, and deliver solutions that enhance reliability and developer productivity.

  • Lead, mentor, and grow an engineering team by supporting career development, performance management, coaching, and a culture of technical excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Define and communicate a multi-year observability strategy, translating technical vision into actionable roadmaps and aligning engineering teams and leadership around priorities.
  • Build and evolve an events-first observability foundation using open standards, including telemetry frameworks, shared libraries, SDKs, and engineering best practices that enable consistent adoption across teams.
  • Drive improvements in reliability and incident detection by implementing solutions around service-level objectives, customer experience signals, and proactive monitoring strategies.
  • Develop platforms and capabilities that enable engineers and AI agents to investigate production environments through fast, scalable, high-cardinality data access patterns.
  • Establish experimentation and validation practices by running pilots, measuring outcomes, and scaling successful approaches across the organization.
  • Own observability tooling and vendor strategy, balancing build-versus-buy decisions, platform flexibility, cost management, and long-term scalability.
  • Contribute to complex technical decisions, architecture reviews, and hands-on development when needed to unblock initiatives or prototype solutions.
  • Promote the use of modern AI development tools and workflows to improve engineering productivity and help teams build more effectively.
  • Collaborate with engineering leaders, technical teams, and business stakeholders to create alignment and deliver impactful platform capabilities.
Requirements:

The ideal candidate brings a strong software engineering background combined with proven engineering leadership experience. You should have experience building internal platforms, driving technical strategy, and delivering scalable solutions in complex environments.

  • 7+ years of experience in software engineering, with a strong background in building software platforms, developer tools, or engineering infrastructure.
  • 3+ years of engineering management experience, including developing engineers, leading teams, and delivering complex technical initiatives.
  • Previous hands-on experience designing and implementing observability, telemetry, or monitoring platforms within an engineering organization.
  • Strong understanding of event-driven systems, including structured events, high-cardinality data, streaming or columnar storage, sampling, tagging, and context propagation.
  • Experience building shared platforms, SDKs, libraries, and developer-focused solutions that enable other engineering teams to work more effectively.
  • Practical knowledge of open observability standards such as OpenTelemetry, as well as experience designing SLIs and SLOs.
  • Ability to define technical vision, prioritize initiatives, and influence teams toward strategic outcomes.
  • Experience using experimentation and data-driven approaches to validate technical solutions and business impact.
  • Strong people leadership skills with the ability to develop talent, provide feedback, foster inclusion, and build high-performing teams.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience working with AI-powered development tools and modern LLM-based workflows is highly valuable.
  • Nice-to-have experience includes working in regulated industries, fintech environments, Kubernetes, progressive delivery practices, columnar databases, or observability solutions for AI and agent-based workloads.
Benefits:
  • Competitive compensation package aligned with experience and market standards.
  • Comprehensive health benefits and life insurance coverage.
  • Employer-supported long-term savings program with matching contributions.
  • Generous time-off package including vacation days, wellness days, and unlimited sick and mental health days.
  • Flexible remote work model with the ability to work internationally for up to 90 days per year.
  • Opportunity to collaborate with talented professionals across North America in a high-growth technology environment.
  • Employee resource groups supporting diversity, inclusion, and community building.
  • A culture focused on innovation, continuous learning, and using modern technologies to solve meaningful problems.
  • Opportunities to influence product direction and build solutions with significant organizational impact.
