About the role

This is an opportunity for a WHS professional looking to take the next step in their career. You'll work closely with project teams across a range of civil infrastructure projects, providing practical WHS support, improving site performance, and helping ensure everyone goes home safely.

Reporting to the HSEQ Manager, you will support allocated NSW projects with their day-to-day WHS requirements while working as part of a broader WHS and HSEQ team. The role includes regular site travel and occasional support for planned night works or out-of-hours activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support compliance with NSW WHS legislation, Ward’s WHS management system, project requirements and client expectations.
  • Advise project teams on WHS documentation, including WHS Management Plans, methodologies, SWMS preparation, review and implementation.
  • Conduct daily safety walks, task observations, site inspections, audits and Chain of Responsibility inspections, ensuring actions are tracked and closed out.
  • Support incident, injury and near miss management, including investigations, reporting, corrective actions and communication of learnings.
  • Facilitate or support toolbox talks, pre-starts, inductions, consultation activities and clear communication of WHS expectations.
  • Monitor subcontractor WHS performance and escalate non-conformances to site management for timely resolution.
  • Support traffic-related works, including TMPs, TCPs, permits, licences, traffic controller competencies, audits and compliance monitoring.
  • Support asbestos-related works, including SafeWork NSW notifications, licence condition monitoring, competency checks and effective site controls.
  • Coordinate site training needs with project leaders, construction managers and the HSEQ Manager, including competency training and refresher training.
  • Assist with workplace consultation and maintain confidentiality when supporting workplace relations matters, grievances or workforce concerns.
  • Stop work where unsafe conditions or serious WHS non-compliances are identified.
  • Promote practical risk management and a positive safety culture aligned with Ward’s values of Staff Care, Superior Client Service and Innovation.

About You

  • Certificate IV, Diploma or equivalent qualification in Work Health and Safety.
  • Previous WHS experience in civil construction, infrastructure, utilities, remediation, earthworks or a similar high-risk construction environment.
  • Experience with traffic management, asbestos works, workplace consultation, incident management or injury management will be well regarded.
  • Experience working on Transport for NSW (TfNSW) and Sydney Water projects would be highly desirable.
  • Resourceful, organised and proactive, with the confidence to communicate clearly with workers, subcontractors, project teams, clients and senior management.
  • Working knowledge of WHS legislation, WHS systems, SWMS, WHSMPs, audits, inspections, task observations, corrective actions, incident reporting, competency monitoring and Dashpivot or similar platforms.
  • Current driver licence, willingness to travel to NSW project sites, and availability to support planned night works or out-of-hours activities from time to time will be required, with roster flexibility discussed and managed reasonably.

What's in it for you?

  • Competitive salary and benefits.
  • Exposure to diverse and complex civil infrastructure projects.
  • Ongoing professional development and career growth.
  • A supportive team environment where knowledge and experience are shared.
  • Flexible work arrangements considered for the right candidate.
