About This Position
Position Summary:
The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) is seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Staff Accountant to join our Finance team. Reporting to the Controller, the Staff Accountant plays a critical role in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the organization’s financial records. This role supports day-to-day financial operations including accounts payable and receivable, bank and account reconciliations, general ledger maintenance, budget preparation, and audit support.
The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in both nonprofit and corporate finance, a solid understanding of double-entry bookkeeping, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Process and manage Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable transactions accurately and in a timely manner
- Prepare and maintain financial statements and internal reports
- Post general ledger entries and adjustments and maintain supporting documentation
- Conduct regular bank and account reconciliations to ensure financial data integrity
- Perform account analysis to identify discrepancies and ensure resolution
- Assist with month-end and year-end close processes
- Support the annual budgeting and forecasting process
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal policies, and, where applicable, SOX regulations
- Collaborate with internal departments to provide financial insights and support decision-making
- Assist with internal and external audits, including preparing and organizing documentation
- Utilize financial software including Sage Intacct, Quicken, PeopleSoft, and Excel for daily accounting tasks
- Support ad hoc reporting, financial analysis, and special projects as needed
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 1-3 years of relevant accounting experience, ideally in both nonprofit and corporate settings
- Experience with accounting systems such as Sage Intacct, Quicken, PeopleSoft, and strong Excel skills
- Solid understanding of GAAP, double-entry bookkeeping, bank reconciliation, and account analysis
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of SOX compliance and internal control frameworks
- High attention to detail, analytical mindset, strong organizational skills
- Collaborative, team-oriented approach

About the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra
For over a century, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) has been recognized as one of America’s leading orchestras and one of Maryland’s most significant cultural institutions. The orchestra is internationally renowned and locally admired for its innovation, performances, recordings, and educational outreach initiatives, including OrchKids.
The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra performs annually for more than 275,000 people throughout the State of Maryland. Since 1982, the BSO has performed at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in Baltimore, and since 2005, with the opening of The Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda, MD, the BSO became the nation’s first orchestra performing its full season of classical and pops concerts in two metropolitan areas.
