Staff Accountant at Baltimore Symphony Orchestra – Baltimore, Maryland

Position Summary:

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) is seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Staff Accountant to join our Finance team. Reporting to the Controller, the Staff Accountant plays a critical role in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the organization’s financial records. This role supports day-to-day financial operations including accounts payable and receivable, bank and account reconciliations, general ledger maintenance, budget preparation, and audit support.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in both nonprofit and corporate finance, a solid understanding of double-entry bookkeeping, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Process and manage Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable transactions accurately and in a timely manner
• Prepare and maintain financial statements and internal reports
• Post general ledger entries and adjustments and maintain supporting documentation
• Conduct regular bank and account reconciliations to ensure financial data integrity
• Perform account analysis to identify discrepancies and ensure resolution
• Assist with month-end and year-end close processes
• Support the annual budgeting and forecasting process
• Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal policies, and, where applicable, SOX regulations
• Collaborate with internal departments to provide financial insights and support decision-making
• Assist with internal and external audits, including preparing and organizing documentation
• Utilize financial software including Sage Intacct, Quicken, PeopleSoft, and Excel for daily accounting tasks
• Support ad hoc reporting, financial analysis, and special projects as needed

Minimum Qualifications

• Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
• 1-3 years of relevant accounting experience, ideally in both nonprofit and corporate settings
• Experience with accounting systems such as Sage Intacct, Quicken, PeopleSoft, and strong Excel skills
• Solid understanding of GAAP, double-entry bookkeeping, bank reconciliation, and account analysis

• Knowledge of SOX compliance and internal control frameworks
• High attention to detail, analytical mindset, strong organizational skills
• Collaborative, team-oriented approach
