The Crewperson performs a variety of unskilled to skilled maintenance work, and operates a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of Village streets, buildings, trees, parks, equipment, storm drainage facilities and systems, and other miscellaneous systems.

The position will receive work assignments, instructions, and job evaluations primarily from the Superintendent of Public Works but may also receive assignments and instructions from the Director of Parks and Recreation and Director of Public Works.

Note, the current starting pay range for the Crewperson is $23.55 to $29.36, depending on qualifications. A 3% cost-of-living adjustment has already been approved for any current employees, to be effective 01/01/2026.
- Inspects and/or repairs streets and drainage systems at frequent intervals to ensure systems are functioning properly
- Maintains a variety of records relating to inspections and maintenance activity
- Responds to complaints, evaluates situation, and explains findings to supervisor
- Ensures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use
- Drives trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment, gravel, and/or sand
- Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; cleans equipment
- Operates light and medium-sized construction and power equipment, such as motor grader, skid steer, backhoe, or end loader
- Operates chain saws, brush chippers, and other equipment used in planting, removing, and/or trimming trees and brush
- Performs winter road maintenance activities including snow plowing, snow blowing, and salting
- Performs all duties in conformance with appropriate safety and security standards
- Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement cutting, ditch digging, manhole and line cleaning, pipe repair, laying, and backfilling
- Performs maintenance of buildings and retains accurate records
- Conducts studies and investigations for reports on special projects and provides technical information to supervisors
- Operates a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment used in the Public Works Department and Parks and Recreation Department
- Regular full-time attendance at this position is required.
- All other duties as assigned.
- May be asked to serve on various employee committees or other committees as assigned.
Education and Experience:
A. Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, and
B. Two (2) years of experience relating to construction, maintenance, or repair, or
C. Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
A. Some knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities.
B. Skill in operation of some of the listed tools and heavy equipment.
C. Knowledge in tree care and/or arborist certification desirable.
D. Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time; Ability to work safely; Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public; Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must possess a valid state driver’s license and have own vehicle with minimum Village required insurance coverage.
- Must possess CDL with class A & B endorsements or be able to obtain within 6 months of hire.
- Employees must reside within twenty (20) miles of the Village of Grafton boundaries as they may be called back to work to respond to emergency or weather-related issues. However, nothing about this residency requirement shall prohibit employees from traveling outside the twenty (20) miles radius during off-duty hours.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Motorized vehicles and equipment, including dump and pickup truck, grader, utility truck, street sweeper, lawn mower, brush chipper, ditch witch, man lift, tamper, plate compactor, saws, pumps, compressors, sanders, generators, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, detection devices, mobile radio, and phone.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions, including inclement weather. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.

The employee must be able and willing to remain on duty to work overtime and/or be called in to work overtime (day or night) as necessary to respond to weather-related and other demands. However, the employee is not required to be on stand-by, as he/she is completely free to pursue his/her own personal interests during off-duty hours.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
