The Division of Fire seeks qualified career status City employees are eligible to compete for the promotional position of Battalion Chief.
Under the general supervision of the Fire Chief, the Battalion Chief, is responsible for performing a variety of supervisory, management, administrative, training, and operational tasks related to the day-to-day operations of their assigned shift as well as performing fire, suppression, technical / special rescue, hazardous materials, emergency medical services, and / or response to disasters within the community. Under administrative direction of the Battalion Chief, assists in planning, directing, managing, and overseeing day-to-day activities and operations of the fire department, including fire suppression, fire prevention, emergency medical services, hazardous materials, response, technical rescue, disaster preparedness, and related programs services and operations. Participates in managing the development and implementation of departmental goals, objectives, and priorities for each assigned service area and development of tactical objectives to reach said goals. Recommends, administers, departmental policies and procedures. Provides highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Fire Chief. Knowledge of fire suppression and prevention techniques; supervisory principles and practice; personnel administration; employee training and development; fire / emergency, rescue techniques; fire investigation and arson detection techniques; fire prevention, laws, codes, rules, and regulations; City / department goals and objectives; City / department policies and procedures; two-way radio operations; workplace, safety practices and procedures; budgeting; interviewing; office practices and procedures; personnel rules and regulations; computer, software; community resources and services; records management; project management; government structure and process; state, federal and local laws and / or regulations; labor relations; local geographical area; and English grammar and spelling.
Possession of a Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university in a related field; five (5) or more years related experience and / or training; prior experience as a command officer preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Possession of a professional Firefighter Certification
Ohio Firefighter II Certification
Ohio EMTParamedic Certification
Ohio Fire Safety Inspector Certification
Ohio Fire and / or EMS Instructor Certification
Operations Level Hazardous Materials Certification(s)
National Incident Management System (NIMS) or National Fire Academy (NFA) course meeting, NIMS ICS (i.e., 100, 200, 300, 400, and 700.
Candidates that have completed Fire Officer I, II, and/or III preferred.
Valid Ohio Drivers license

Position Responsibilities: 50.00% - Commands and responds promptly to fire, medical, rescue, and other emergency calls as assigned; ensures that all response activities are in compliance with division policies and applicable laws; assists with planning, directing, and/or coordinating the training of fire division personnel; may respond as incident commander (e.g., oversees enforcement of fire inspection regulations; investigates fire scenes and attempts to determine cause of fire); supervises and assigns the cleaning, maintenance, repair, and usage of all fire facilities, apparatus, and equipment. Serves as second in command to the Fire Chief, and acts as Fire Chief in his/her absence. 35.00% - Assists with planning, directing, and supervising the city's fire and EMS division operations; manages and supervises all fire division personnel (e.g., schedules and assigns tasks; interviews job applicants; recommends the hiring of job applicants; recommends discipline; recommends pay assignments; evaluates performance; receives grievances or employee complaints; approves and recommends the approval of leave requests; attends or participates in meetings in which policy questions are reviewed or discussed; establishes standard operating guidelines; develops and implements policy; recommends policy changes; participates in personnel or labor relations activities). 5.00% - Assists the Fire Chief with preparing capital and operating budgets; prepares cost estimates for budget recommendations; submits justifications for budget items; monitors and controls expenditures. 5.00% - Participates in the development of specifications and bid processes; coordinates equipment purchases; prepares reports and maintains records as required.
The employee has exposure to chemical compounds found in an office environment (e.g., toner, correction fluid); works in the vicinity of dock boards (bridge plates); works in an area in which the means of egress is or can be obstructed; works on and around powered platforms and/or vehicle mounted platforms (e.g., manlifts, fire trucks); is exposed to environmental conditions which may result in injury from fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and/or poorly ventilated work areas; is exposed to possible injury from extremely noisy conditions above 85db (e.g., from equipment, from sirens); is exposed to possible injury from radiation; is exposed to possible injury from hazardous gases, chemicals, flammables, or air contaminants; is exposed to possible injury from hazardous waste; is exposed to possible injury due to unclean or unsanitary conditions; is exposed to possible injury as a result of electrical shock; is exposed to possible injury as a result of working with moving mechanical parts of equipment or machines; is exposed to possible injury from explosions (e.g., chainsaws, hose roller, fire trucks, aerial platform/ladder, hose washer, fire pumps); is exposed to possible injury as a result of falling from high places; uses or works in proximity to the use of firearms; works in or around crowds; has contact with potentially violent or emotionally distraught persons; has exposure to potentially vicious animals; has exposure to extreme non-weather related heat or cold and hazardous driving conditions; has exposure to shaking objects or surfaces; has exposure to second-hand smoke; this is considered heavy work and the employee must demonstrate the ability to perform the phsyical demands required of the position in accordance with the U.S. Department of Labor's (D.O.L.) physical demands strength ratings.
In cases of emergency, unpredictable situations, and/or department needs, may be required to lift, push, pull, and/or carry objects heavier than D.O.L. strength ratings recommend.
