Electrical Engineering Department Manager

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Electrical Engineering Department Manager based in United States .

This is a senior leadership opportunity to guide a growing electrical engineering organization supporting complex, mission-critical, and advanced technology facilities. You will shape technical standards, engineering methods, and delivery strategies for sophisticated electrical infrastructure. The role combines people leadership, technical authority, project oversight, financial management, and business development. You will guide the design of reliable and efficient power, lighting, grounding, low-voltage, and critical electrical systems. Collaboration across mechanical, structural, architectural, process, and project management disciplines will be essential. You will also have opportunities to drive innovation and responsibly leverage AI tools to improve engineering productivity, quality, and decision-making.

Accountabilities:
  • Lead, mentor, coach, and develop electrical engineers, designers, and technical support staff, building a culture of technical excellence, collaboration, accountability, and continuous learning.
  • Establish training, onboarding, professional development, and career progression programs, including support for PE licensure and specialized certifications.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, provide constructive feedback, identify development opportunities, and support succession and workforce planning.
  • Develop strategic plans for the Electrical Department that align with business objectives and anticipate technological and market trends in advanced manufacturing and high-tech facilities.
  • Provide technical leadership and serve as a senior authority on complex electrical engineering challenges, design decisions, constructability, and technical quality.
  • Oversee the design of complex power distribution and critical power systems, including UPS systems, generators, redundant feeds, surge protection, grounding, and bonding.
  • Guide the selection and specification of electrical equipment such as switchgear, transformers, motor control centers, variable frequency drives, and protective relaying systems.
  • Direct and review short-circuit, coordination, arc-flash, load-flow, and power-quality studies to ensure system reliability, safety, and regulatory compliance.
  • Provide technical oversight for fire alarm, telecommunications, low-voltage, lighting, lightning protection, and grounding electrode systems.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary project leaders to ensure electrical systems are seamlessly integrated into complex facility designs.
  • Drive continuous improvement by incorporating lessons learned, refining workflows, and using AI-enabled tools to streamline technical reports, design reviews, and coordination activities.
  • Evaluate and implement emerging technologies, design tools, and engineering methodologies that improve efficiency, accuracy, and project outcomes.
  • Oversee technical execution, budgets, schedules, quality processes, and financial performance across electrical engineering projects.
  • Develop and manage departmental operating budgets while monitoring expenses, profitability, resource allocation, and delivery performance.
  • Support business development through client relationship management, technical presentations, proposal development, industry engagement, and identification of new service opportunities.
  • Participate in recruitment efforts to attract and retain highly qualified engineering professionals.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Established professional experience in electrical engineering design, particularly within industrial, advanced manufacturing, high-tech, or mission-critical facilities.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and managing engineering teams with direct reports, including mentoring, coaching, performance management, and professional development.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical engineering principles, design practices, applicable codes, safety requirements, and industry standards.
  • Experience with complex power distribution, critical power systems, electrical equipment specification, grounding, lighting, low-voltage systems, and related facility infrastructure.
  • Ability to provide technical direction on engineering studies such as short-circuit, coordination, arc-flash, load-flow, and power-quality analyses.
  • Strong project, budget, resource, and schedule management capabilities, with an understanding of departmental financial performance and profitability.
  • Proven ability to contribute to business development, including client relationships, technical presentations, proposals, and industry engagement.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, presentation, and stakeholder-management skills, with the ability to interact confidently with clients, project teams, engineers, and senior leadership.
  • Strategic mindset with the ability to balance technical excellence, business priorities, workforce needs, and client expectations.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in the state of practice, or the ability to obtain reciprocity within an agreed timeframe, is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated interest in engineering innovation, continuous improvement, emerging technologies, and responsible use of AI tools to enhance engineering workflows.
  • Ability to lead in a dynamic, collaborative environment while maintaining high standards for quality, accountability, safety, and delivery.
