Senior Controls Engineer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Controls Engineer based in the United States.

This is a remote engineering opportunity focused on designing, programming, commissioning, and optimizing industrial control systems across a range of applications. You will combine automation expertise, programming skills, and systems-level problem solving to deliver safe, efficient, and reliable control solutions. The role offers significant exposure to PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, control architectures, and industrial automation technologies. You will work closely with engineers, technicians, project managers, customers, and other stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle. The position is well suited to an experienced controls professional who enjoys solving complex technical challenges and working in a safety-first environment. You will have opportunities to expand your expertise across diverse industries while contributing to high-impact systems integration projects. The role is fully remote with approximately 25% domestic travel and regular overnight trips as project needs require.

Accountabilities
  • Design, develop, and implement industrial control systems for a variety of applications, including network architecture, cause-and-effect diagrams, control philosophies, automation systems, and process control solutions.
  • Apply control theory, automation principles, programming expertise, and engineering judgment to develop efficient, reliable, and scalable control systems.
  • Program and configure PLCs, HMIs, SCADA platforms, and other industrial control devices.
  • Develop and implement control algorithms and automation software using programming languages such as Ladder Logic and Function Block Diagram (FBD).
  • Test, validate, troubleshoot, and diagnose control systems to ensure they meet technical, performance, reliability, and customer requirements.
  • Identify root causes of control-system issues and implement solutions that improve system performance, reliability, production efficiency, and uptime.
  • Install, configure, and test control software and systems at customer sites during startup and commissioning activities.
  • Collaborate with customers, engineers, technicians, project managers, and other specialists to ensure successful project delivery and commissioning.
  • Evaluate system performance and identify opportunities to optimize processes, improve production efficiency, reduce downtime, and enhance reliability.
  • Clearly communicate technical information, project status, issues, and recommendations to customers, colleagues, and other stakeholders.
  • Maintain a strong personal commitment to safety and ensure control systems are designed, programmed, installed, and commissioned in accordance with applicable safety practices.
  • Support or implement safety protocols and procedures throughout engineering, field, startup, and commissioning activities.
  • Apply management and leadership skills to coordinate work, support project execution, and contribute to successful outcomes.
  • Maintain flexibility to travel domestically, including regular overnight travel and out-of-town assignments, based on project requirements.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline is preferred; equivalent relevant professional experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in industrial control systems, including startup and commissioning.
  • Previous management experience is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of control theory, industrial automation, programming, and low-voltage controls.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve complex technical problems with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Experience programming and working with one or more major industrial controls platforms, including Allen-Bradley ControlLogix, CompactLogix, PLC5, SLC500, FactoryTalk, or RSView.
  • Familiarity with GE platforms such as RX3i, RX7i, 90-30, 90-70, QuickPanel, iFIX, Cimplicity, or Proficy is valuable.
  • Familiarity with Siemens platforms such as S7-300, S7-400, S5, TI, WinCC, WinCCFlex, or TIA is valuable.
  • Experience with Schneider/Square D Modicon Quantum, ClearSCADA, DeltaV DCS, Wonderware InTouch, ArchestrA, System Platform, Win911, or OPC-based SCADA systems is advantageous.
  • Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Proficiency with computer-aided design (CAD) software and other relevant engineering and automation tools.
  • Experience in pipeline and/or oil and gas processing is a plus.
  • Industry experience in sectors such as semiconductor, oil and gas, utilities, agriculture, metals, mining, paper, data centers, healthcare, or food and beverage is preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical information clearly with customers and coworkers.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong commitment to workplace safety and willingness to contribute to a safety-focused culture.
  • Willingness and ability to work out of town and travel regularly, including overnight travel.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, stand for extended periods, and drive regularly, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to successfully complete a fit-for-duty physical examination when required.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and periodic, unannounced random testing.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Valid driver's license and a satisfactory driving record that can be maintained throughout employment.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without employer-sponsored visa or work-permit support.
  • Must be fluent in reading, writing, and speaking English.

  • Annual salary range of $140,000–$175,000 USD.
