Job Description

Staff Data Engineer

This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for a Staff Data Engineer in Canada.

This is a high-impact technical leadership role focused on shaping the future of an AI-driven data platform powering next-generation decision systems. You will define how data is structured, standardized, and operationalized across the organization, enabling scalable analytics, product intelligence, and LLM-powered workflows. The role sits at the intersection of data engineering, platform architecture, and AI system design, requiring both deep technical execution and strategic thinking. You will build and evolve data pipelines that support batch, streaming, and retrieval-based AI use cases while ensuring governance, reliability, and performance at scale. Working closely with product, engineering, and data science teams, you will influence how data is transformed into actionable intelligence. This is an opportunity to take ownership of foundational systems that directly enable AI innovation in a fast-moving, mission-driven environment.

Accountabilities:
  • Define and own the architecture and long-term evolution of the enterprise data platform, with a focus on AI-enabled and LLM-driven systems.
  • Design and build scalable data pipelines supporting analytics, product features, decision systems, and AI evaluation workflows.
  • Establish standards for data modeling, schema design, data contracts, and multi-tenant data standardization across teams.
  • Develop retrieval-ready and AI-optimized data structures, including embedding pipelines, vector storage, and feedback loop datasets.
  • Implement and maintain data governance frameworks, including PII handling, lineage tracking, and policy-based tagging.
  • Build and optimize both batch and real-time streaming data systems using modern distributed data architectures.
  • Collaborate with engineering, product, and data science teams to align data infrastructure with business and AI requirements.
  • Identify and solve complex platform challenges such as automated schema mapping and cross-system data integration.
  • Drive best practices in data reliability, scalability, and performance across the organization.
Requirements:
  • Extensive experience in data engineering, data platform, or distributed systems roles.
  • Proven ability to design, build, and scale complex data pipelines across multiple teams or large organizations.
  • Strong expertise in data modeling, schema design, and modern data architecture principles.
  • Advanced proficiency in Python and SQL.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms such as GCP, AWS, or Azure, with GCP preferred.
  • Experience with modern data warehouses (BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift or similar) and transformation tools such as dbt.
  • Knowledge of streaming and CDC systems (Kafka, Debezium, Datastream or equivalent).
  • Experience with AI/LLM data patterns such as retrieval-augmented pipelines, embeddings, and evaluation datasets.
  • Strong understanding of data governance, lineage, and security practices.
  • Ability to operate in ambiguous, high-impact environments with strong cross-functional influence.
  • Nice to have: experience with multi-tenant SaaS platforms, compensation or HR data, or AI-native data infrastructure.
Benefits:
  • Competitive compensation with a target base salary of $180,000–$195,000 CAD
  • Equity participation in a high-growth AI-focused company
  • Remote-first work model with occasional local meetups in Calgary
  • 20 days of annual vacation plus sick, compassionate, and voting leave
  • Pension contribution and retirement support
  • Comprehensive commitment to work-life balance and flexibility
  • Strong culture of learning, iteration, and technical ownership
  • Opportunity to work on cutting-edge AI and data platform systems
  • Inclusive, collaborative, and high-trust engineering environment
  • Professional growth through ownership of high-impact architectural decisions.
