Job Description
This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for a Senior Data Engineer in Canada.
This role is designed for a hands-on data engineering professional who thrives in complex, multi-system environments and goes beyond traditional reporting or query writing. You will work on building and optimizing high-performance data solutions that power a proprietary platform in the insurance domain. The position requires deep expertise in SQL Server along with strong versatility across scripting, APIs, automation, and modern AI-driven workflows. You will operate across both Windows and Linux environments, helping transform fragmented systems into efficient, scalable data architectures. This is a highly technical role where end-to-end ownership, problem-solving autonomy, and performance optimization are essential. You will also contribute to automation initiatives that reduce manual effort and improve system intelligence.
In this role, you will be responsible for designing, building, and optimizing robust data systems that support complex transactional and application workflows. You will work across databases, APIs, and external services to deliver integrated, high-performance solutions. Key responsibilities include:
- Designing and optimizing SQL Server solutions with a focus on performance tuning, indexing, and scalable data modeling
- Managing relational and semi-structured data, including JSON processing using native SQL Server capabilities
- Developing automation scripts using PowerShell and other scripting tools to streamline operational workflows
- Integrating APIs and external systems to extend platform functionality and enable end-to-end data flows
- Working across interconnected systems to solve full-stack data challenges rather than isolated reporting tasks
- Implementing automation and efficiency improvements across manual and repetitive processes
- Exploring and applying LLM-based workflows to enhance productivity and structured data operations
This role requires strong technical depth in data engineering combined with adaptability across systems and technologies. You should be comfortable working independently in complex environments where problem-solving and ownership are critical. Key requirements include:
- Strong expertise in SQL Server, including query optimization, indexing strategies, and data modeling
- Hands-on experience working with JSON and hybrid data structures within SQL Server
- Proficiency in PowerShell or similar scripting languages for automation and system operations
- Ability to work across databases, APIs, and distributed systems in integrated environments
- Proven ability to deliver robust technical solutions under time constraints
- Experience in complex, multi-system environments rather than isolated analytics roles
- Familiarity with Python, APIs, and system integration work is highly desirable
- Exposure to LLM tools such as OpenAI or Claude is a plus
- Experience in regulated industries such as insurance or financial services is an advantage
- Background in building internal tools, automation frameworks, or cloud/hybrid systems is a plus
- Fully remote work with flexibility to operate from anywhere
- Opportunity to work on complex, real-world insurance technology systems
- Exposure to modern technologies including APIs, automation, and AI/LLM-driven workflows
- High ownership environment with end-to-end responsibility for technical solutions
- Collaborative and fast-paced engineering culture focused on impact and efficiency
- Opportunity to work across diverse systems and build scalable data infrastructure
