Job Description

Job Summary

The MEP Coordinator is responsible for managing the coordination, scheduling, and communication activities that connect design, prefabrication, and field installation teams on multifamily construction projects. This role serves as the operational hub between engineering, project management, procurement, and trade partners — ensuring that design, installation and fabrication deliverables, BIM models, submittals, and RFIs are tracked, distributed, and resolved in a timely manner. The MEP Coordinator thrives in a fast-paced environment, takes ownership of project workflows, and keeps all stakeholders informed and accountable.

This role may also be titled BIM Coordinator, VDC Coordinator, or Project Engineer depending on experience.

Key Responsibilities

Project Coordination & Communication

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for day-to-day coordination between design engineers, project managers, field superintendents, and trade partners.
  • Track and manage the distribution of drawings, RFIs, and system clashes amongst internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Maintain project logs, action item trackers, and coordination matrices to ensure nothing falls through the cracks.
  • Facilitate and document coordination meetings, including MEP clash resolution, and owner/architect review sessions.
  • Proactively identify schedule risks and communicate issues to project leadership with recommended solutions.

BIM & Digital Coordination

  • Support BIM coordination workflows using Navisworks, Revit, and BIM 360 / Autodesk Construction Cloud.
  • Assist in clash detection reviews and coordinate issue resolution with engineering and field teams and between internal and external stakeholders such as in house Design and Engineering teams and trade partners or customers.
  • Maintain organized file management and version control of models, drawings, and project documentation.
  • Prepare coordination packages, drawing logs, and progress reports for distribution to project teams.
  • Document coordination agreements and signoffs, address and hold accountable underperforming parties.

RFI Generation

  • Log and manage RFIs from initiation through close-out, ensuring timely responses and proper documentation.
  • Coordinate with procurement and prefab teams to align submittal approvals with material lead times and production schedules.

Prefab & Field Support

  • Coordinate between the design team and the prefab facility to ensure drawings and BOMs are accurate, complete, and released on schedule.
  • Support field teams with drawing interpretation, as-built markups, and issue resolution during construction.
  • Assist in tracking field changes, potential change orders, and documenting deviations from design.
  • Conduct or support site visits as needed to verify field conditions and support coordination efforts.

Schedule & Reporting

  • Maintain and update project coordination schedules in alignment with construction milestones.
  • Prepare and distribute weekly status reports, look-ahead schedules, and coordination dashboards for project leadership.
  • Monitor design and submittal deadlines, flagging delays to project managers before they impact the critical path.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Required: Associate or bachelor’s degree in construction management, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering. Equivalent field experience will be considered at a rate of four to one.
  • Required: 2–5 years of experience in MEP construction coordination, project engineering, or a related role.
  • Experience with multifamily or adjacent market (hospitality, senior or student housing, mixed used), construction projects is required.
  • Familiarity with MEP systems (mechanical, electrical, low voltage, and plumbing) and construction documentation required.

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in Bluebeam Revu, Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams), and project management platforms (Procore, Autodesk Construction Cloud, or equivalent).
  • Working knowledge of Revit, Navisworks, or BIM 360 preferred; willingness to develop proficiency required.
  • Experience managing submittals, RFIs, and drawing logs in a construction environment.
  • Familiarity with NEC, California Electrical Code, California Plumbing Code, or California Mechanical Code a plus.

Soft Skills

  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple concurrent workstreams.
  • Clear and professional written and verbal communication skills; comfortable coordinating across disciplines and with external stakeholders.
  • Self-starter with a proactive approach to problem-solving and a sense of urgency around schedule and deliverables.
  • Collaborative team player who builds trust with both office and field personnel.

Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the U.S. on a full-time basis. AMPAM does not provide employment sponsorship.
