Job Description
Are you passionate about health, wellness, and community engagement? As the Fitness Program Supervisor at the Veterans Memorial Community Center, you’ll lead efforts to inspire a healthier community. This role involves developing, implementing, and overseeing a wide range of fitness programs designed for our members and the broader community. From planning engaging fitness offerings to hiring and supervising fitness staff, managing equipment, and coordinating special events, you'll play a vital role in fostering a welcoming and dynamic environment.

•Manages all aspects of developing and administering a comprehensive fitness program for members at Veterans Memorial Community Center and the IGH Community.
•Conducts research on fitness and wellness trends and determines appropriate fitness activities, classes and events to meet the needs of VMCC members and the community.
•Manages registration and resolves participant concerns or questions regarding fitness classes and programs.
•Establishes staffing needs for fitness classes and events, reserves class space and ensures appropriate equipment is coordinated for each class or event.
•Establishes fitness program goals, sets metrics and regularly evaluates progress to monitor the impact of fitness programming.
•Plans, prepares and makes recommendations for the annual budget for the fitness center.
•Works with Community Center Manager and Membership Specialist to monitor member satisfaction and respond to suggestions and feedback.
•Attends community events to promote the City’s fitness programs and activities.
•Updates and maintains fitness program files, records and databases. Annually checks files for proper data practices requirements.
•Fully oversees the Fitness Center at the Veterans Memorial Community Center, including:
•Performs customer/client relation duties. Handles public questions, concerns, or complaints regarding programs/services. Works with other department personnel, department supervisors, school district/schools and community groups in assessing program needs, promoting programs/services, or meeting community interests of City residents.
•Performs various customer and community relations. Makes presentations at various events to promote the fitness center; applies for and administers wellness grants or funding alternatives for the fitness center; coordinates fitness initiatives with various outside agencies.
•Attends relevant seminars and conferences and participates in professional associations to stay up to date in the field.
•Keeps the Recreation Superintendent informed of significant issues or challenges impacting areas of responsibility.
•Performs other duties of a comparable level or type, as apparent or assigned.
Minimum:
•Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science, Physical Education, Fitness Management, Kinesiology, Recreation or closely related field and 3 years of professional experience in the field of fitness; or an equivalent combination of education and experience to perform the essential functions of the position.
•Red Cross CPR/First Aid/AED Certification
•Group Fitness Instructor Certification from a nationally recognized organization (e.g. American Council on Exercise (ACE), Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFFA) or National Exercise Trainers Association NETA).
Desired:
•Certified Red Cross CPR/First Aid Instructor
•Personal Training Certificate from a nationally recognized organization (e.g. ACE, ACSM, NASM or NETA).
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
•Knowledge of human anatomy, kinesiology and training principles.
•Knowledge of group fitness teaching strategies, principles and practices and ability to directly deliver fitness instruction and personal training.
•Knowledge of diet, nutrition, exercise, and health issues and trends.
•Knowledge of fundamentals of staff supervision and coordination.
•Knowledge of customer and client relation fundamentals and practices.
•Knowledge of City/department administrative procedures (i.e. human resources, purchasing, recordkeeping requirements, etc.).
•Knowledge of safety guidelines related to the field of personal fitness and fitness center operations.
•Ability to efficiently schedule and coordinate use of fitness center.
•Ability to manage multiple tasks and programming.
•Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
•Ability to prepare clear and accurate statistical and narrative reports.
•Skilled in formulating, developing and implementing fitness programs, events and activities as well as fitness center policies and procedures.
•Ability to work both independently and as an effective member of a team.
•Ability to effectively coordinate, monitor, schedule, and delegate work to fitness center personnel.
•Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with program participants, Community Center staff, outside agencies and the general public.
•Implementing and applying customer/client relation skills and routines.
•Ability to accurately and effectively prepare and administer grant applications and awards.
•Ability to operate and use common office equipment, computers and general business productivity software/applications.
Work Environment:
Occasional exposure to wet, humid (non-weather) conditions when providing physical instruction in pool; risks of falls on wet pool decks; work is generally in a moderately noisy location. Duties include physical requirements associated with the movement/assembly of equipment, demonstrating and teaching fitness. Position requires some evening and weekend hours.

- Creates and monitors staff schedules, approves sub requests, and covers shifts as necessary.
- Monitors fitness staff’s job performance and compliance with procedures; conducts staff performance reviews as needed. Ensures compliance with City personnel policies and standards.
- Conducts or coordinates necessary training for fitness instructors. Maintains accurate and up-to-date records and ensures staff’s required certifications and/or licenses are up-to-date.
