Job Description

Founded in 1989, AFD Petroleum is a leading independent supplier of fuel, lubricants, and storage solutions across Alberta, B.C., Yukon, and Alaska. With 35 years of experience, we’re committed to delivering reliable service, innovative solutions, and lasting value, centered on our people, our customers, and our communities.

Job Summary:

Our Senior Bookkeeper keeps AFD's finance function running smoothly. This role owns day-to-day general bookkeeping, journal entries, account maintenance, and general ledger accuracy, while getting a front-row seat to month-end close alongside our Financial Managers and Corporate Controller. You'll handle reconciliations, prepare and file recurring tax returns, support audits, and work directly in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central across our Alberta and BC/Yukon branches. If you like variety, want your Business Central skills to actually matter, and enjoy being the person the team can count on when things get busy, this is your role.

Your Schedule:

Full-time, in-office position based in Edmonton, AB, working standard business hours Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm as part of AFD's finance team.

Why AFD:

  • Great health and insurance benefits & medical, dental, vision, life insurance, disability, AD&D, because we believe in taking care of yourself.
  • Discount on fuel.
  • Career development, with room to grow toward a broader accounting career, designation or not.
  • Paid orientation & training.
  • Personal/Sick Paid Days.

What you will do day-to-day:

  • Own the day-to-day general bookkeeping: journal entries, account maintenance, and general ledger accuracy.
  • Prepare monthly working papers and supporting schedules across balance sheet and income statement accounts.
  • Perform reconciliations — inventory, bank, control accounts, and sub-ledger to GL, and chase down variances until they're resolved.
  • Prepare and file recurring monthly tax returns (GST/HST, Fuel Tax, and similar filings).
  • Play a key role in month-end close, working alongside the Financial Managers and Corporate Controller.
  • Provide audit support, preparing working papers and responding to questions.
  • Set up, review, and refine general ledger accounts to improve tracking and analysis.
  • Provide backup coverage for other accounting functions, accounts payable and purchasing, during during vacations and busy stretches.
  • Work directly in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central across our Alberta and BC/Yukon branches.

What you need to succeed: (Required education and experience)

  • Several years of solid bookkeeping experience, you know the full cycle, not just one corner of it.
  • Strong Excel skills and a natural instinct for tracking down a reconciliation that won't balance.
  • A flexible, team-first mindset, someone who's genuinely glad to jump in wherever the team needs a hand.

Extra skills and Knowledge

  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is a big plus.
  • Comfort with GST/HST and provincial fuel tax filings, or a fast learner who can pick it up.
  • A CPA designation is not required, we care about what you can do, not just the letters after your name.

As part of the interview process, all candidates will undergo a successful completion of pre-employment requirements, including a criminal record check and employment reference verification, and an offer will be contingent upon the successful pre-employment checks.
