Job Summary:

The Lead Pharmacy Technician is responsible for the computer data entry of prescriptions and filling of medication orders including the proper handling, usage, and storage of drugs in the pharmacy. Assist pharmacy manager with scheduling. Leads other pharmacy staff in ensuring efficient management of pharmacy inventory.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Performs all responsibilities/duties required by the pharmacy as defined by the scope of service to ensure that the unique nature of the client is addressed.
  • Responsible for maintaining a working knowledge of and conforming to legal requirements concerning the distribution of drugs, as well as good working knowledge of recent developments in the field of pharmacy (self-continuing education by attending available conferences, meetings and seminars).
  • Maintains working knowledge of the 340B program and implications of same as it relates to the daily operations of the pharmacy.
  • Creates or updates the patient’s profile, including demographic, health and insurance information in the computer.
  • Responsible for maintaining accurate and proper patient medication profiles.
  • Helps patients who are dropping off or picking up prescription orders; may assist with deliveries.
  • Responsible for interpretation of physician medication orders for accuracy.
  • Enters prescription orders into the computer.
  • Communicates with prescribers and their agents to obtain refill authorization.
  • Responsible for ensuring the correct dispensing and labeling of medication prior to verification by pharmacist.
  • Communicates with insurance carriers to obtain payment for prescription claims.
  • At point of sale, verifies that customer receives correct prescription (s) and offer pharmacist counseling.
  • Completes periodic medication orders to wholesaler, place orders on shelves, and verifies all associated paperwork. Establishes appropriate PAR levels in computer for medications to ensure appropriate stock of individual medications.
  • Prepares and is responsible for accuracy of the pharmacy inventory, including cycle and year-end inventory counts.
  • Assists the pharmacist, under direct supervision, in the practice of the pharmacy, in accordance with local, state, federal, and company regulations. Assists with scheduling of pharmacy technicians to ensure appropriate staff coverage at the pharmacy.
  • Assists with development and implementation of quality and profitability measures and/or enhancements for the pharmacy.
  • Helps maintain pharmacy policy and procedure manual.
  • Assists in training new employees.
  • Assists other pharmacy technicians.
  • Maintains knowledge of and implements loss prevention techniques. Ensures timely return of excess, short-dated and expired medication to wholesaler/reverse distributor.
  • Monitors and assists with daily pharmacy staff projects.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • State Pharmacy Technician License
  • PTCB Certified Pharmacy Technician
  • Minimum of three years pharmacy experience
  • Working knowledge of the 340B drug program
  • Working knowledge of pharmacy regulations
  • Working knowledge of inventory control measures.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED
