Hotel Ulysses is a place where wanderers from anywhere can come for one-of-a-kind experiences – whether they are popping out of their Baltimore studio for a drink or need a place to stay during their East Coast tour. To venture into Baltimore’s rich history and vibrant community by way of the landmark Latrobe building feels only natural — an icon with a checkered past that has been restored to carry on its legacy. Nestled into the neighborhood of Mt. Vernon, the sprawling site houses 116 guest rooms alongside Blooms, an eccentric cocktail lounge, and Ash-Bar, a salon style café. Far from a support for tourists, Ulysses stands firm as a contributor and tableau vivant of Baltimore’s artistic tradition–and its contemporary evolution.

A reliable, thoughtful, and concise communicator, our ideal candidate will have experience fostering a safe, creative and healthy workplace that people can thrive in. This is someone who understands the irreplaceable contribution each role at the hotel plays, problem-solves with ease, and can handle logistical duties such as payroll and disciplinary processes. As an essential backbone to the team, our Manager of People & Culture will support staff while liaising with management and adhering to Ash standards and guidelines as well as celebrate important milestones and holidays in a fun, brand-appropriate manner.

The People & Culture Manager will:

  • Improve the employee experience by developing policies and procedures that support fairness, professionalism, and exceptional service.
  • Recruit, hire, and onboard new team members.
  • Manage employee relations, investigations, disciplinary actions, and exit interviews alongside hotel leadership.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for HR-related questions and employee concerns.
  • Lead performance reviews and support employee growth and retention.
  • Foster a positive workplace culture through employee feedback and open communication.
  • Oversee employee benefits, payroll, workers’ compensation, and unemployment claims.
  • Maintain accurate employee records and updated employee handbooks.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies and local/state labor laws.
  • Assist with manager-on-duty shifts as needed, including weekends.
  • Manage staff uniforms, lockers, and related tracking

We are seeking a candidate who:

● Will be passionate about providing exceptional service according to ASH Hotels brand standards

● Pays extraordinary attention to detail, meets deadlines, follows up, and through

● Is a creative problem solver that takes a hands-on approach to finding solutions and excels at understanding and clarifying issues within the hotel and staff

● Has impeccable interpersonal skills that demonstrate experience in employee relations and recruiting

● Has experience in the field of hospitality

● Has exceptional communication skills - there is no such thing as overcommunicating

● Has supervisory and leadership experience

● Works well in a team environment and naturally exudes professionalism

● Is an effective listener who can effectively resolve conflicts between managers and employees fairly and directly - nothing slips through the cracks

● Can work well under stress or in high-pressure situations

● Is confident in utilizing and learning new technologies, including payroll software

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Salary range between $55,000 - $60,000 annually, commensurate with experience
