About This Position

Summary: We are a growing company in an interesting and challenging segment of the insurance industry. We are always looking for talented individuals to join our Personal Insurance Underwriting team; to perform a full range of policy underwriting functions related to Personal Insurance, such as Broker/Producer/Company Carrier Underwriter liaison and administrative account servicing.

Essential Functions/Principal Responsibilities:

  • Administer and monitor underwriting rules and guidelines, rating manual rules and insurance laws and regulations to review, underwrite and document new and renewal policy transactions, within authority.
  • Evaluate, classify, and rate each risk to determine acceptability, coverage, and pricing as per basic underwriting requirements. Refer applications or endorsements requests for further underwriting analysis by carrier on an as-required basis.
  • Review paperwork and/or applications for signatures, dates and other considerations to ensure that coverage may be issued. Verify coverage limits, perform necessary calculations and complete other checks before forwarding to processing team.
  • Order, review and take appropriate action on required reports, endorsement requests, service requests and general correspondence.
  • Analyze individual risk pricing for new business submissions and renewals against template expectations, and assists making appropriate changes within authority.
  • Communicate with brokers to obtain information needed to underwrite risks, respond to questions and address issues.
  • Underwrite new business, renewals and endorsements by assessing the acceptability of the risk, and factors affecting the potential for loss.
  • Maintain service levels, achieve your performance targets, and have the ability to comprehensively discuss and plan with your leader for optimal performance.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of work processes and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records of decisions made and maintain completeness of policy data
  • Communicate decisions and respond to requests in a prompt and professional manner
  • Understand rating procedures, wordings, underwriting policies and regulations
  • Handle work assignments efficiently
  • Work effectively towards the goals of the team
  • Build positive working relationships with internal and external parties
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Personal Attributes

  • RIBO licensed
  • Strong written, oral and interpersonal communication skills
  • Able to work independently & in a team setting
  • Excellent attention to details and organizational skills to ensure timeliness and quality of underwriting development
  • Achieve a standard of excellence with work processes and outcomes, honoring company policies and regulatory compliance
  • Is receptive to feedback, adaptable to change, has a desire to learn, and embraces continuous improvement

Probation Period: 3 Months

Experience: High School Diploma/GED required, with some college or 1 to 3 years related experience.
