Position Summary
The Accounting & Lunch Program Assistant provides financial and administrative support to Sioux Falls Lutheran School while serving as the designated School Nutrition Program Director. This position combines accounting responsibilities, including accounts payable and accounts receivable, with the administration and oversight of the school's NSLP and CACFP programs. Previous experience as a School Nutrition Program Director is not required as long as the state qualifications are met.
The position works closely with the Finance Director, school administration, staff, families, vendors, and applicable state and federal agencies to ensure accurate financial records and an effective, compliant school nutrition program.

Key Responsibilities
Accounting & Business Office
- Process accounts payable and assist with accounts receivable, including payments, deposits, invoices, and reimbursements.
- Maintain accurate financial records and assist with account and bank reconciliations.
- Assist with tuition, student accounts, vendor records, and other financial transactions as assigned.
- Support monthly and annual financial reporting and other projects directed by the Finance Director.
- Handle and reconcile cash and financial transactions related to athletic and school activities.
- Respond to questions from families, employees, and vendors regarding financial matters.
- Maintain confidentiality and accurate documentation.
- Provide general administrative support to the Finance Director and Business Office.
School Nutrition Program
- Serve as the designated School Nutrition Program Director for Sioux Falls Lutheran School.
- Oversee the daily administration of the NSLP and CACFP programs and maintain compliance with applicable state and federal requirements.
- Manage required applications, reports, meal counts, claims, records, and documentation.
- Coordinate meal ordering, menus, food and supply purchasing, inventory, and vendor relationships.
- Monitor student meal accounts, payments, eligibility, and family communications.
- Monitor program revenues and expenditures and maintain accurate financial records.
- Coordinate and support food-service staff and required program training.
- Communicate with the South Dakota Department of Education and other applicable agencies regarding program requirements and compliance.
- Stay current on changes to school nutrition program requirements.
Qualifications
The successful candidate must meet the applicable State of South Dakota education and experience requirements for serving as a School Nutrition Program Director.
In addition, candidates should have:
- Basic knowledge of accounting principles and financial procedures.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and the ability to learn accounting and school-management software.
- Strong communication, customer service, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and work effectively with staff, families, vendors, and government agencies.
School Nutrition Experience
Previous experience as a School Nutrition Program Director is not required. Sioux Falls Lutheran School will provide training and ongoing support to a qualified candidate who meets the applicable State of South Dakota education and experience requirements.
Training will include NSLP and CACFP procedures, reporting and reimbursement requirements, meal counting and claiming, eligibility processes, recordkeeping, purchasing and inventory, school nutrition software, and program compliance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate degree or higher in accounting, business, finance, food service, nutrition, or a related field.
- Experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, bookkeeping, or financial administration.
- Experience with school nutrition, food service, or a related program.
- Experience working in a school, nonprofit, or educational environment.
Reporting Relationship
The position reports to the Finance Director for accounting and business-office responsibilities and works closely with school administration regarding School Nutrition Program operations and compliance.
Position Expectations
