JOB OVERVIEW: GROUNDSPERSON – UTILITY VEG. MANAGEMENT
The Groundsperson – Utility Vegetation Management plays a critical role in supporting safe, efficient, and compliant vegetation management operations in the field. This position is responsible for providing essential ground support to crew members, ensuring work zones are properly maintained, equipment is safely operated, and daily operations run smoothly. The Groundsperson directly contributes to crew productivity, job quality, and adherence to safety and regulatory standards across all job sites.
This role requires individuals who are comfortable working in outdoor environments and performing physically demanding tasks, with practical experience in hands-on, field-based work settings. The Groundsperson partners closely with climbers, equipment operators, and forepersons to maintain workflow efficiency and uphold ArborWorks’ commitment to safety, professionalism, and operational excellence.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Field Operations & Crew Support:
- Perform general labor activities including site setup, brush and debris removal, and job site cleanup.
- Support climbers, bucket operators, and crew leaders by managing ropes, tools, and materials from the ground.
- Maintain situational awareness to ensure safe and efficient work zone operations.
- Assist with traffic and pedestrian control in accordance with safety protocols.
Equipment Operation & Maintenance:
- Operate chainsaws, wood chippers, and other vegetation management equipment in accordance with company and safety standards.
- Conduct routine inspections, cleaning, and basic maintenance of vehicles, tools, and equipment.
- Report equipment malfunctions, hazards, or safety concerns promptly to leadership.
Safety & Compliance:
- Follow all company safety policies, OSHA requirements, and utility vegetation management standards.
- Participate in daily job briefings, hazard assessments, and safety meetings.
- Identify and mitigate potential hazards to maintain a safe working environment.
- Support emergency response readiness, including aerial rescue preparedness.
Training & Development:
- Actively participate in structured training programs, including the Line Clearance Qualification Program (LCQP).
- Develop foundational skills in rigging, knot-tying, and rope management.
- Demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning, skill development, and increased responsibility over time.
Customer & Company Representation:
- Interact professionally with customers, property owners, and the public.
- Represent ArborWorks in a positive and professional manner at all times.
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Experience:
- Previous experience working in outdoor, physically demanding environments required (e.g., landscaping, groundskeeping, construction, forestry, or similar hands-on labor roles).
- Experience using basic hand tools or power equipment in a field setting is strongly preferred.
Skills & Abilities:
- Ability to perform strenuous physical labor safely and efficiently.
- Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather and terrain conditions.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and a willingness to learn and follow direction.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team in a safety-focused environment.
- Basic communication skills and attention to detail.
Licenses / Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license required.
Required Training:
- Groundsperson training (completed and signed).
- Annual Aerial Rescue training.
- Participation and progress within the Line Clearance Qualification Program (LCQP).
- CPR and First Aid certification required within 90 days of hire.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Prior experience in utility vegetation management or tree care.
- Familiarity with chainsaw operation, chipping equipment, or tree trimming practices.
- Commercial driver’s license (CDL) or ability to obtain.
- Knowledge of industry safety standards and best practices.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Outdoor, field-based role with exposure to varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and uneven terrain.
- Frequent interaction with heavy equipment, vegetation, and high-noise environments.
- Travel required 80–90% of the time, including travel to remote job sites as needed.
- Physically demanding work requiring:
- Lifting up to 50 pounds regularly
- Standing, walking, bending, and kneeling for extended periods
- Fast-paced environment with early start times, variable schedules, and overtime based on operational demands.
