You’ll help evolve architecture that supports millions of work items across thousands of organizations and projects. Your work will span Ruby on Rails, PostgreSQL, APIs, real-time functionality, and performance optimization at significant scale. You’ll collaborate closely with product managers, engineers, users, and open-source contributors to turn complex problems into impactful product improvements. The environment is asynchronous, distributed, highly collaborative, and focused on continuous learning, technical excellence, and practical innovation.
- Partner with product managers and engineers to understand user needs, shape requirements, evaluate trade-offs, and break complex initiatives into incremental, shippable solutions.
- Design, build, and maintain backend and real-time capabilities within a large-scale Ruby on Rails application, including GraphQL and REST APIs and subscriptions.
- Develop and improve portfolio planning functionality, including work item hierarchies, status rollups, capacity planning, and related planning experiences.
- Improve PostgreSQL performance and scalability through query and write optimization, indexing, denormalization, partitioning, and the appropriate use of technologies such as Elasticsearch or ClickHouse.
- Build proofs of concept for complex technical challenges and maintain comprehensive automated test coverage, with a focus on test reliability and performance.
- Support safe production releases through feature flags, observability, monitoring, and thoughtful rollout practices.
- Mentor engineers and open-source contributors through code reviews, pairing, feedback, contributor support, hiring, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
- Participate in on-call rotations, investigate production incidents, contribute to root cause analysis, and continuously improve engineering, development, and review processes.
- Incorporate AI-powered development tools responsibly into daily workflows to improve engineering efficiency, quality, and impact.
- Significant experience as a software or product engineer, with strong full-stack knowledge and a current specialization in backend development.
- Advanced proficiency with Ruby and Ruby on Rails, along with a solid understanding of modern frontend architectures and technologies.
- Strong PostgreSQL expertise, including experience optimizing databases at scale through queries, writes, indexing, denormalization, and partitioning.
- Demonstrated experience designing and evolving GraphQL and/or RESTful APIs with attention to scalability, backward compatibility, and clear frontend contracts.
- Experience leading multi-engineer projects over several months and providing technical guidance through code reviews, mentoring, feedback, and collaboration.
- A strong product mindset, with the ability to represent user needs while balancing technical, product, and business considerations.
- Experience improving and maintaining large automated test suites, including their reliability and performance.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, particularly within asynchronous and geographically distributed teams.
- Experience integrating artificial intelligence into software development workflows; experience building AI-powered features is a plus.
- Familiarity with Elasticsearch, ClickHouse, or Python is advantageous.
- Ability to work effectively with colleagues, users, product partners, and open-source contributors across different locations and perspectives.
- Candidates are encouraged to apply even if they do not meet every listed qualification and can demonstrate relevant transferable experience.
