Job Title: Service Technician II
Department: Fort McMurray Service Centre
Reports to: Service Center Operations Manager
Location: Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada
Shift: 1st
OVERVIEW
Independently inspect, troubleshoot, overhaul, and repair stationary industrial machinery and mechanical rotating equipment, including but not limited to centrifugal pumps and speed reducers. Serve as a technical resource within the Service Centre by supporting quality assurance, continuous improvement, and customer-facing technical resolution efforts for GIW supplied and serviced equipment.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Demonstrates and promotes safety, environmental stewardship, and housekeeping as the top priority at all times; ensures compliance with all company safety policies, procedures, and standards.
• Independently interpret and apply blueprints, diagrams, schematics, and technical documentation to verify work procedures and diagnose complex equipment issues.
• Lead equipment inspections and ensure rebuild Bills of Material (BOMs) and Repair Scopes are accurately developed and communicated to support quoting, planning, and scheduling activities.
• Develop, review, and refine technical work instructions and service procedures to improve consistency, quality, and efficiency within the Fort McMurray Service Centre.
• Establish and maintain detailed inspection, measurement, and final test documentation for rebuilt equipment; ensure adherence to documentation requirements for all rebuilds.
• Manage inspection tooling inventory, establish calibration intervals, and coordinate calibration activities to maintain measurement accuracy and compliance.
• Prepare non-conformance reports, participate in root cause analysis, and collaborate with internal teams to implement corrective and preventive actions.
• Perform final quality inspections on internally rebuilt and externally outsourced equipment to verify compliance with GIW standards and customer specifications.
• Act as a technical liaison when meeting with customers and suppliers to resolve quality, reliability, and performance-related issues.
• Support sales and service initiatives by traveling independently or with sales personnel to customer sites to provide technical expertise to operations, maintenance, and reliability teams.
• Mentor and provide technical guidance to less experienced technicians as required.
• Perform other duties as assigned by management in support of operational objectives.
QUALIFICATIONS
• 5+ years of hands-on experience in the inspection, rebuild, and repair of rotating equipment in an industrial service environment.
• Strong working knowledge of GIW pumps, components, tolerances, and assembly procedures.
• Proven mechanical and technical problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose non-routine issues.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, etc.) for documentation and reporting.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical information to internal and external stakeholders.
• Highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of working independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
• Demonstrated ability to read, interpret, and apply engineering drawings, layouts, and parts documentation.
Education
• High School Diploma or equivalent (required)
• post-secondary mechanical or technical training (preferred)
• Red Seal Millwright Journeyman Certification (preferred)
