Job Description
The Senior Director, Beacon Health Foundation Michigan serves as Beacon Health Foundation’s senior in-market fundraising leader for Michigan. This position is responsible for advancing philanthropic growth in Michigan through consistent presence, external relationship development, hospital president and clinical leader engagement, council development, board and community relationships, and a personal major gift portfolio.
This role functions as the Foundation’s senior development leader in Michigan without creating a separate Michigan fundraising team. The position is directly tied to the unified Major Gifts Team and works in close partnership with the Director of Development, Major Gifts Team to ensure Michigan donor strategy, portfolio movement, solicitation readiness, stewardship, and pipeline activity are aligned with Foundation-wide fundraising standards.
This position is intentionally broader than a traditional major gift officer role. The Senior Director carries a personal major gift portfolio but also serves as the senior Foundation presence for Michigan hospital presidents, clinical leaders, System and subsidiary board members, Foundation council members, donors, prospects, and community leaders. The purpose of the role is to build trust, create access, advance donor relationships, strengthen Beacon Health Foundation’s presence in Michigan, and ensure Michigan philanthropic opportunities are developed through one shared Foundation fundraising system.
The Director also helps develop and implement a comprehensive Michigan market fundraising strategy, translates hospital and clinical priorities into compelling cases for support, and advances grateful patient philanthropy through appropriate collaboration with physicians, clinical leaders, hospital leaders, councils, boards, donors, and volunteers.

- Represent Beacon Health Foundation with Michigan hospital presidents, clinical leaders, donors, prospects, council members, board members, and community leaders.
- Build Beacon Health Foundation’s credibility, visibility, and philanthropic presence in Michigan markets.
- Advance philanthropic priorities by helping Michigan leaders, clinicians, and community partners understand how philanthropy can support patient care, innovation, access, community health, and strategic growth.
- Develop a clear understanding of Michigan hospital and clinical priorities so donor conversations are connected to meaningful philanthropic opportunity.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive Michigan market fundraising strategy focused on major and leadership giving, aligned with Foundation-wide fundraising priorities and standards.
- Lead the identification and development of Michigan philanthropic priorities in partnership with the Foundation President, hospital presidents, senior executives, physicians, and clinical leaders.
- Translate Michigan hospital and clinical priorities into clear, compelling cases for support that align with Beacon Health Foundation’s message platforms and donor strategy.
- Increase Michigan philanthropic market presence through intentional outreach, donor storytelling, community visibility, and relationship-based engagement.
- Manage a personal portfolio of major gift and leadership gift donors and prospects.
- Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gift prospects in the Michigan market.
- Work directly with the Director of Development, Major Gifts Team to align portfolio expectations, pipeline movement, solicitation strategy, proposal development, and stewardship.
- Partner with the r Gift Officers assigned to Michigan to ensure donor relationships are actively managed through one shared major gift platform.
- Ensure donor strategies are documented, current, and connected to clear next steps.
- Use Foundation Operations support for prospect research, portfolio reports, pipeline tracking, meeting preparation, and CRM follow-up.
- Develop and drive strategies to build long-term donor relationships, move qualified prospects through the pipeline, and support solicitation readiness.
- Use donor storytelling, stewardship insights, and case development to strengthen cultivation, solicitation, and follow-up strategies.
- Build strong working relationships with Michigan hospital presidents and clinical leaders.
- Serve as the Foundation’s primary senior relationship point for Michigan hospital leadership.
- Help hospital leaders understand their role in identifying philanthropic opportunities, strengthening donor confidence, and connecting donors to meaningful impact.
- Partner with clinical leaders to identify patient-centered, mission-relevant, and strategically aligned opportunities for philanthropic investment.
- Prepare hospital presidents and clinical leaders for donor conversations, stewardship opportunities, campaign discussions, council engagement, and community visibility.
- Advance grateful patient philanthropy in the Michigan market by helping physicians, clinical leaders, and hospital leaders understand how appropriate patient and family gratitude can be connected to meaningful philanthropic engagement.
- Build effective working relationships with senior executives, physicians, clinical leaders, council members, board members, and volunteer leaders to advance aligned fundraising priorities.
- Partner with physicians and clinical leaders to surface patient-centered stories, program needs, innovation opportunities, and strategic priorities that may inspire donor engagement.
- Build and strengthen Foundation councils in Michigan in partnership with the Foundation President and the Director of Community Philanthropy and Donor Engagement.
- Develop relationships with System Board members, subsidiary board members, council members, and community leaders who can help create access, validate priorities, build trust, and advance donor relationships.
- Use councils and board relationships as strategic assets for donor discovery, trust transfer, relationship capital, community intelligence, and stewardship.
- Ensure council and board relationships are connected to donor strategy and not treated only as meeting participation.
- Route introductions, referrals, insights, and community opportunities into Major Gifts, Operations, or Community Philanthropy as appropriate.
- Engage Foundation volunteer boards, councils, and cabinets to advance and support strategic fundraising priorities in the Michigan market.
Partnership with Major Gifts Team
- Work as part of one Foundation-wide major gift strategy.
- Participate in portfolio reviews, pipeline meetings, donor strategy sessions, and fundraising planning.
- Partner with the Director of Development, Major Gifts Team to ensure Michigan opportunities are not managed separately from the rest of the Foundation’s fundraising system.
- Collaborate with gift officers when donor relationships, clinical relationships, board connections, or council involvement intersect with Michigan priorities.
- Help ensure the Senior Gift Officer working in Michigan has the local context, access, hospital relationships, and strategic support needed to succeed.
- Partner with Community Philanthropy and Donor Engagement on councils, engagement events, third-party events, fundraising events, Physician Philanthropy Council connections, associate engagement, and stewardship collaboration.
- Partner with Foundation Operations on portfolio management, pipeline tracking, prospect lists, prospect development, CRM documentation, reporting, and donor briefing materials.
- Partner with Foundation Communications on proposals, case materials, donor stories, impact updates, stewardship pieces, invitations, campaign collateral, and Michigan market messaging.
- Use shared support resources so the Senior Director remains focused on fundraising leadership, relationship development, donor strategy, and philanthropic growth.
- Partner with Community Philanthropy and Donor Engagement to plan and support cultivation, stewardship, and grateful engagement experiences that deepen donor relationships and advance Michigan donor strategies.
- Partner with Foundation Communications to shape donor storytelling, impact narratives, and case materials that translate Michigan priorities into clear philanthropic opportunities.
- Work with Major Gifts, Communications, Community Philanthropy, and Operations to ensure Michigan donors receive timely, meaningful, and accurate stewardship.
- Support stewardship experiences that reinforce donor trust, show impact, and deepen long-term relationships.
- Ensure donors understand how their philanthropy makes something possible, moves a priority faster, or grows impact for patients, families, clinicians, and communities.
- Help protect and grow donor relationships through disciplined follow-up and transparent communication.
- Use cultivation, stewardship, and grateful engagement experiences to deepen donor confidence, reinforce impact, and support long-term philanthropic relationships.
- Michigan major gift pipeline grows in quality, clarity, and movement.
- Major gift prospects are identified, qualified, cultivated, solicited, and stewarded through the unified Major Gifts Team.
- Michigan hospital presidents and clinical leaders view the Foundation as accessible, responsive, and strategically aligned.

ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:
- Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
- Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
- Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
- Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
- Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
- Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
- Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
- Complies with established organization and department policies.
- Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.
- Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
- Minimum of 7 to 10 years of progressive fundraising, development, healthcare philanthropy, nonprofit leadership, or related experience.
- Demonstrated success in major gift fundraising, donor relationship development, proposal strategy, stewardship, and community relationship building.
- Experience working with executives, physicians, board members, donors, prospects, and community leaders.
- Healthcare philanthropy experience strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of donor strategy, portfolio management, moves management, stewardship, and pipeline discipline.
- Excellent communication, relationship-building, judgment, and leadership presence.
- Ability to work across geography and maintain strong collaboration with shared support functions.
- Experience advancing grateful patient philanthropy, physician engagement, or clinical partnership strategies in a healthcare or complex nonprofit environment preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to translate organizational, hospital, and clinical priorities into donor-centered cases for support.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to support donor storytelling, case development, and impact-based philanthropic conversations.
- Comfort with data-driven decision-making, performance metrics, and disciplined portfolio and pipeline management.
