Job Description

Senior Software Engineer, Sandboxes

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Software Engineer, Sandboxes based in the United States.

This is a senior engineering role focused on building secure, isolated runtime environments that enable AI coding agents to work safely and autonomously. You’ll help shape sandbox infrastructure that gives agents the freedom to execute real development tasks without compromising the developer’s host environment. The role spans runtime architecture, security boundaries, agent integration, performance, reliability, and developer-facing workflows. You’ll work across macOS, Windows, and Linux while solving challenging infrastructure problems at the intersection of AI and developer tooling. The position offers significant technical ownership, influence over architecture, and opportunities to shape an emerging product area. You’ll collaborate closely with engineering, product, open-source communities, and adjacent teams in a globally distributed environment. This role is particularly well suited to an experienced engineer who enjoys ambiguous problems, technical leadership, and building infrastructure used directly by developers.

Accountabilities
  • Lead sandbox product development: Design, develop, and drive improvements across agent integration, tool permissions, and developer-facing workflows.
  • Build secure runtime infrastructure: Develop and evolve isolated microVM-based environments with strong security boundaries, safe defaults, and reliable execution for AI agent workloads.
  • Improve cross-platform reliability: Investigate and resolve correctness, performance, and stability issues across macOS, Windows, and Linux.
  • Optimize sandbox lifecycle management: Improve the reliability, performance, and scalability of sandbox creation, session management, execution, and teardown.
  • Drive architecture and technical strategy: Collaborate with engineering peers, Product, and adjacent teams to evolve system architecture as product and technical requirements grow.
  • Provide technical leadership: Set high standards through design reviews, code reviews, technical decision-making, and mentorship of other engineers.
  • Engage with the developer ecosystem: Participate in open-source projects and relevant communities around sandboxing, MCP, AI agents, and emerging agentic development technologies.
  • Own production reliability: Participate in on-call rotations and respond to critical stability or performance issues affecting users.
  • Document and communicate effectively: Produce clear technical documentation and share knowledge across the team and broader engineering organization.
  • Shape long-term technical direction: Help define the future architecture of the local runtime and filesystem layers while aligning technical strategy with product and business priorities.
  • Drive measurable improvements: Deliver tangible gains in sandbox correctness, performance, reliability, and developer experience over time.
Requirements
  • 8+ years of software engineering experience, including demonstrated technical leadership on production systems operating at scale.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience building developer tools, desktop applications, runtime infrastructure, or comparable systems used directly by developers.
  • Strong understanding of the agentic software development ecosystem, including how coding agents operate and interact with tools and their execution environments.
  • Experience with technologies or systems involving containers, virtual machines, sandboxes, isolated runtimes, or secure execution environments.
  • Strong ability to reason about security and isolation boundaries, including what a sandbox should expose, what it should restrict, and how to establish secure-by-default behavior.
  • Demonstrated experience driving architecture and technical strategy across multiple engineers or teams.
  • Strong technical judgment and the ability to navigate complex, ambiguous problems spanning multiple systems and components.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build clarity and consensus across technical and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Strong product mindset and interest in understanding how infrastructure decisions affect developers and end users.
  • Comfortable working with a high degree of autonomy in a globally distributed, remote-first environment.
  • Willingness to participate in on-call responsibilities and take ownership of production reliability.
Benefits
  • US compensation of $160,900–$260,700 plus equity, depending on relevant factors and location.
  • Equity participation, providing employees with an opportunity to share in the organization’s growth.
  • Freedom and flexibility to structure work around your life.
  • Remote-first work environment, with offices available in Seattle and Paris.
  • Dedicated quarterly wellness days and an end-of-year wellness break.
  • Home office setup to support a comfortable and productive remote workspace.
  • 16 weeks of paid parental leave after six months of employment.
  • Technology stipend equivalent to $100 USD net per month.
  • PTO plan designed to encourage meaningful time away from work.
  • Training stipend for conferences, courses, and classes.
  • Medical benefits, retirement programs, and holidays, with offerings varying by country.
  • Company merchandise and additional employee perks.
  • Visa sponsorship may be considered on a case-by-case basis, depending on business needs.
