Job Description

Senior Data Scientist - Risk

This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for a Senior Data Scientist – Risk in Canada.

This role offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of risk intelligence within a fast-growing fintech environment operating at the intersection of cryptocurrency, payments, and financial security. You will play a key role in defining how risk is measured, understood, and managed across complex crypto and fiat systems. Working within a newly established and highly autonomous team, you will help design foundational risk frameworks, data systems, and decisioning tools from the ground up. Your work will directly influence fraud prevention strategies, customer protection mechanisms, and regulatory compliance approaches at scale. This is a highly cross-functional position where you will collaborate with engineering, product, security, compliance, and operations teams. It is ideal for a data scientist who thrives in ambiguous environments and enjoys building impactful systems rather than only analyzing existing ones.

Accountabilities:
  • Partner with engineering teams to define the architecture and technical direction of internal risk systems and decisioning infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to define risk metrics, success criteria, and decision frameworks that guide product and operational strategies.
  • Analyze fraud, scam, and abuse patterns across crypto and fiat products to identify risks and opportunities for mitigation.
  • Design, build, and maintain reporting systems tracking fraud loss, false positives, customer friction, and operational efficiency.
  • Develop and improve data models, instrumentation, and analytical frameworks supporting risk decision-making and operational workflows.
  • Apply statistical methods and machine learning techniques to improve detection, prediction, and decision quality where appropriate.
  • Conduct deep-dive investigations into incidents, emerging threats, and systemic risk patterns.
  • Communicate insights and recommendations clearly to senior stakeholders to influence product and risk decisions.
  • Help define analytical standards, methodologies, and best practices within the Risk organization.
Requirements:
  • 5+ years of experience as a Data Scientist, Decision Scientist, or in a similar analytical role.
  • Strong experience in fraud, risk, trust and safety, AML, compliance, or related domains.
  • Advanced proficiency in SQL and Python for large-scale data analysis.
  • Experience with statistical modeling, machine learning techniques, experiment design, or causal inference.
  • Strong business and product judgment with the ability to connect analysis to real-world risk and customer outcomes.
  • Experience working with modern data stack tools such as Snowflake, dbt, or similar platforms.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex analyses into actionable insights.
  • Proven ability to operate effectively in ambiguous, fast-moving environments.
  • Strong ownership mindset with the ability to challenge assumptions and drive decisions.
  • Experience collaborating across engineering, product, and operational teams to influence outcomes.
  • Interest in fintech, crypto, or regulated financial environments is highly valued.
Benefits:
  • Competitive salary range of 150,000–200,000 CAD per year
  • Equity participation as part of total compensation
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and wellness coverage
  • Health and wellness spending accounts
  • Fully remote work across Canada with optional office access in major cities
  • Annual learning and development budget of 2,000 CAD
  • Flexible time off policy with additional vacation incentives
  • Parental leave top-up up to 18 weeks at 100% salary
  • Performance-based salary reviews and growth opportunities
  • Team offsites and company-wide events to foster connection and collaboration
  • Ownership culture with stock options for all employees
