Position Summary
The Second Shift Production Manager oversees all production activities on shift, including direct supervision of Line Supervisors and production staff, ensuring performance targets are achieved across Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost (SQDC) metrics. Serving as the senior operational leader during second shift, this role is accountable for maintaining a safe work environment, enforcing compliance with plant policies, and driving a culture of accountability across all levels of the production team. The manager ensures product quality standards are consistently met, production schedules are achieved, and staffing and labor are effectively allocated to optimize throughput and minimize downtime. This individual monitors shift-level cost performance, identifying opportunities to reduce waste and improve labor efficiency, while coordinating with Maintenance, Engineering, and Quality teams to resolve issues quickly and keep production running smoothly. The Second Shift Production Manager also participates in shift handoff meetings to ensure seamless transitions, escalates operational issues to plant leadership as needed, and actively supports continuous improvement initiatives across the production floor.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Lead and develop 2nd Shift Supervisors and production teams to meet daily production goals.
- Monitor and maintain SQDC standards—ensuring safe, high-quality, efficient production.
- Coordinate shift start-up, changeovers, and end-of-shift reporting.
- Partner with Quality, Maintenance, and Planning to resolve production issues quickly.
- Enforce company policies, safety regulations, and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
- Ensure smooth shift hand-offs and communication between departments.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- 3+ years of supervisory or management experience in a food manufacturing or packaging environment.
- Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Working knowledge of SQDC, OEE, and Lean Manufacturing principles.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
Desired Qualifications & Traits
· Ability to lead, mentor, and develop junior team members
· Previous knowledge of GMPs, and FDA regulations.
· Strong problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills.
Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and extended shifts as needed.
Physical Requirements
· Walk and stand for extended periods of time (up to 8–12 hours per day).
· Use hands and fingers to handle, feel, and operate objects, tools, or controls
· Reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl as needed
· Climb stairs and occasionally ladders or platforms
· Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
· Ability to work in a production/manufacturing environment, which may include varying temperatures and noise levels.
· Must be able to wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for long periods of time, which may include hair/beard nets, gloves, safety glasses, steel-toed shoes, hearing protection, lab coats, or protective outerwear.
