Job Description

Account specialist, High Value at Risk (HVAR)

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Account Specialist, High Value at Risk (HVAR) based in Canada.

This role focuses on supporting the resolution of delinquent, high-risk, and non-performing customer accounts while delivering a trusted, customer-first experience.
You will combine collections expertise, negotiation, analysis, and relationship management to develop effective payment and loss-mitigation strategies.
Working largely independently, you will assess account information, identify recovery opportunities, and recommend solutions that balance customer needs with business objectives.
The role also involves handling complex escalations, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, and supporting strategic collections initiatives.
You will contribute to process improvements, reporting, coaching, and the development of tools and practices that strengthen the collections lifecycle.
Success requires sound judgment, strong communication, analytical thinking, and the ability to navigate sensitive customer situations with professionalism and empathy.
This is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact in a regulated financial-services environment while helping improve both customer outcomes and portfolio performance.

Accountabilities:
  • Review and evaluate delinquent, high-risk, and written-off accounts to identify collection and recovery opportunities, using established loss-mitigation processes and procedures.
  • Build rapport with customers, understand their financial needs, and provide informed guidance on payment strategies, collection solutions, and available products.
  • Manage customer interactions from initial contact through resolution, including inquiries, transactions, documentation, payment status updates, escalations, and referrals to appropriate internal teams.
  • Develop action plans and negotiate solutions that maximize recovery, minimize losses, and protect the organization’s interests while considering the customer’s circumstances.
  • Analyze account data and information to assess collection probability, identify trends, and provide recommendations that support effective decision-making.
  • Handle complex or escalated customer situations with professionalism, escalating unresolved issues, policy exceptions, or higher-risk matters when appropriate.
  • Prepare regular and ad-hoc reports, dashboards, and data analyses to provide visibility into collections performance and account activity.
  • Support strategic initiatives, process improvements, and the ongoing optimization of the collections lifecycle, including loss-mitigation solutions for non-performing and high-risk accounts.
  • Provide expertise, coaching, and guidance to collections personnel, helping colleagues strengthen their capabilities, processes, and results.
  • Help design and implement business processes, tools, training materials, and programs that improve efficiency, consistency, and service quality.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders across customer service, collections, and other business functions to resolve issues and deliver effective solutions.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and protect the confidentiality of customer and organizational information while following applicable policies, procedures, laws, regulations, and risk-management standards.
  • Monitor industry trends, collections practices, regulatory developments, and competitive offerings to inform customer conversations and operational improvements.
Requirements:
  • 3–5 years of relevant professional experience, combined with a post-secondary degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of consumer collections, credit qualifications, and the laws and regulations governing collections activities at federal, provincial, and local levels.
  • Good knowledge of financial products and services, as well as awareness of competitive market trends and customer needs.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex or sensitive matters clearly and professionally.
  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving capabilities, including the ability to evaluate account information, identify collection opportunities, and make sound recommendations.
  • Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust with customers, colleagues, managers, and other stakeholders.
  • Well-developed influence and negotiation skills, particularly when managing difficult customer situations or aligning stakeholders around solutions.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment, diagnose problems, and determine appropriate actions within established policies, procedures, and risk parameters.
  • Strong organization, prioritization, and time-management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and complex account situations.
  • Customer-focused mindset combined with commercial awareness and a commitment to protecting organizational interests.
  • Comfort working independently while also contributing to team initiatives, coaching, continuous improvement, and cross-functional projects.
  • Commitment to confidentiality, regulatory compliance, responsible risk-taking, and accurate execution of customer and account transactions.
Benefits:
  • Salary range of $45,500–$84,500 CAD, with placement depending on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications.
  • Potential performance-based incentives, discretionary bonuses, commission opportunities, and additional rewards depending on the position and compensation structure.
  • Health insurance coverage.
  • Dental and other employee benefit programs.
  • Tuition reimbursement opportunities.
  • Accident and life insurance.
  • Retirement savings plans.
  • Training, coaching, and opportunities to expand professional skills and experience.
  • Inclusive, equitable, and accessible workplace environment.
  • Remote work opportunity across multiple Canadian provinces and territories.
  • Workplace accommodations available throughout the recruitment and selection process.
