This role is responsible for managing the financial lifecycle of complex engineering, environmental, and professional services projects from initiation through closeout.
The position serves as a key financial partner to Project Managers and operational teams, ensuring accurate billing, revenue recognition, and project reporting.
You will oversee contract requirements, monitor project performance, and resolve accounting challenges while maintaining compliance with client and regulatory standards.
The role combines technical project accounting expertise with strong collaboration skills to support successful project delivery.
You will contribute to process improvements, mentor team members, and help strengthen financial operations across a diverse project portfolio.

As a Senior Project Accountant, you will manage project accounting activities, provide financial guidance to project teams, and ensure accurate reporting throughout the project lifecycle.
- Manage a portfolio of projects from setup through closeout, maintaining accurate financial records, contract details, and project documentation.
- Review and interpret contract terms, including Time & Materials, Lump Sum, Cost Plus, Unit Price, and Not-to-Exceed agreements, to ensure proper accounting treatment.
- Prepare timely client invoices, revenue recognition adjustments, and supporting documentation while coordinating approvals and revisions with Project Managers.
- Monitor project costs, revenue, accounts receivable, consultant expenses, and subcontractor costs to identify issues, investigate variances, and support collection activities.
- Deliver reliable financial reporting and support month-end and year-end close processes for assigned projects.
- Process contract amendments and change orders, monitor funding limits, and maintain complete audit-ready documentation.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, client requirements, and public sector contract obligations, including municipal, county, state, federal, and grant-funded projects.
- Serve as a trusted financial advisor to Project Managers and Operations teams by proactively identifying solutions to complex accounting and billing challenges.
- Mentor and provide guidance to Project Accountants on procedures, transactions, and best practices.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives by enhancing project accounting workflows, processes, and reporting capabilities.
The ideal candidate brings extensive project accounting experience, strong analytical capabilities, and the ability to collaborate effectively with technical and operational teams.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 8+ years of progressive project accounting experience, preferably within engineering, environmental, architecture, construction, or professional services industries.
- Proven experience managing the complete financial lifecycle of projects, including setup, contract review, billing, revenue recognition, collections, and closeout.
- Experience administering public sector contracts and understanding compliance requirements related to municipal, county, state, federal, or grant-funded projects.
- Strong knowledge of various contract structures, including Time & Materials, Lump Sum, Cost Plus, Unit Price, and Not-to-Exceed contracts.
- Experience partnering directly with Project Managers and operational leaders to support financial decision-making.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including PivotTables, XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP, formulas, and data analysis.
- Strong understanding of project accounting principles, revenue recognition practices, and financial reporting.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with strong attention to accuracy and detail.
- Strong organizational abilities with the capacity to manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to build trusted relationships across teams.
- Experience with Deltek Vantagepoint, Deltek Vision, or similar ERP systems is preferred.
