Resident Physician - Residency Program

Description:

Must demonstrate competency in clinical and administrative medical tasks under the supervision of physicians. Must maintain excellent interpersonal relationships with others.

Must possess excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Must possess basic computer skills.

Must be able to lift, bend, pull and push,using good body mechanics, without limitation.

Able to sit 2 hours or longer consecutively.

Able to stand in place 2 hours or longer consecutively.

Remain on feet 2 hours or longer consecutively.

Able to perform motor skills, such as finger manipulation.

Must possess visual acuity with corrective lenses to read printed material and visualize patients to the degree that changes in color or respirations can be detected; hearing ability with auditory aids to understand the normal speaking voice without viewing the speaker and auscultation of the chest using a stethoscope; and speaking ability to ask and answer pertinent questions and relay information.

Must demonstrate the ability to wear a properly fitting respiratory mask for periods of time without limitations.

Occasionally exposed to chemicals, moving objects, loud noise.

Able to see objects closely, as in reading, on a continuous basis.

Able to concentrate on fine detail with some interruptions on a continuous basis.

Able to understand and relate to specific ideas generally several at a time,
continuous basis.

Able to remember multiple tasks/assignments given to self and others over long periods of time continuously.

Must be able to work under stressful conditions and situations.

Principal Duties and Functions

• Adheres to the prescribed curriculum of the residency program.
• Develops a thorough working knowledge of hospital policies and procedures and functions within them.
• Adheres to all policies, procedures, schedules, and assignments of the Internal Medicine residency program. The assignment of hours of duty and night call are made by the Program Director. These assignments may include days, plus fair scheduling of nights and weekends on-call. These assignments must comply with the ACGME clinical and educational work hours restrictions other applicable duty hours policies.
• Provides medical care to patient with whom they interact at a level that meets institutional and community standards. As the position of resident involves a combination of supervised, progressively more complex and independent patient evaluation and management functions and formal educational activities, the competence of the resident is evaluated on a regular basis. The program maintains a confidential record of the evaluations.
• The position of resident entails provision of care commensurate with the resident’s level of advancement and competence, under this general supervision of appropriately privileged attending teaching staff.

This includes:

a. Participation in safe, effective and compassionate patient
care.
b. Developing an understanding of ethical, socioeconomic and medical/legal issues that affect graduate medical education and how to apply cost containment measures in the provision of patient care.
c. Participation in the educational activities of the training program and, as appropriate, assumption of responsibility for teaching and supervision of other residents and students and participation in institutional orientation and education programs and other activities involving the clinical staff.
i. Residents will be progressively responsible for providing care of patients. PGY-1, PGY-2 and PGY-3 residents will be responsible for day-to-day order writing, daily progress notes, and accumulation and integration of data. They will supervise third and fourth-year medical students on their service. Intermediate and senior residents will be responsible for supervision of junior residents. They are responsible for initial evaluation and direction of care for patients on their services. They will serve as liaison between their service and the attending physician. They will supervise third and fourth year medical students on their service and are responsible for providing learning materials.
d. Participation in institutional committees and councils to which the resident is appointed or invited.
e. Performance of these duties in accordance with the established practices and procedures and policies of the institution and those of its programs, clinical departments and other institutions to which the residents are assigned.
6. Participates in all departmental programs as required by the department.
7. Performs other duties as may be requested by the Program Director.
8. Keeps current on all theoretical and practical applications related to care of the internal medicine patient.

Essential Job Functions for Residents
The following list includes tasks that are representative of those required of a resident in Archbold Medical Center. This list is not meant to be all inclusive nor does it constitute all academic performance measures or graduation standards. It does not preclude the residency from
temporarily restructuring resident duties as it deems appropriate for residents with acute illness, injury, or other circumstances of a temporary nature.
A resident, without the use of an intermediary, must be able to:
• Take a history and perform a physical examination
• Administer injections and obtain blood samples
• Use sterile technique and universal precautions
• Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation
• Move throughout the clinical site and hospitals to address routine and emergent patient care needs
• Communicate effectively with patients and staff in the English language, verbally and in writing, in a manner that exhibits good professional judgment and good listening skills and is appropriate for the professional setting.
• Demonstrate timely, consistent and reliable follow-up on patient care issues such as laboratory results, patient phone calls, or other requests
• Input and retrieve computer data through a keyboard and read a computer screen
• Read charts and monitors
• Perform documentation procedures, such as chart dictation and other paperwork, in a timely fashion
• Manage multiple patient care duties at the same time
• Make judgments and decisions regarding complicated, undifferentiated disease presentations in a timely fashion in emergency, ambulatory, and hospital settings
• Demonstrate organizational skills required to eventually care for 12 or more outpatient cases per half day
• Take call for the practice or service, which requires inpatient admissions and work stretches of up to 24 hours
• Present well-organized case presentations to other physicians or supervisors
• Participate in and satisfactorily complete all required rotations in the curriculum.

Education/Experience:

Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO)
