Job Description
Statement of Purpose:
Assists Nursing Staff in the transport, transfer and position of patients and the transport of equipment, supplies and/or specimens under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse on the unit. Assist nursing staff with limited clerical support.
MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists in and accompanies patients in the admission, transfer and discharge procedures.
- Transports patients to and from various departments as requested.
- Utilizes safe transfer techniques and good body mechanics.
- Under direct supervision may assists nursing staff in transfers of patients into and out of bed, and ambulation of patient as needed.
- Assists nursing staff in lifting and positioning of patients as needed.
- Assists in the transport of bodies to morgue.
- Transports specimens to correct departments.
- Reports any observed changes in condition or behavior of patient and any unusual incidents.
- Assists in maintaining a clean, safe environment. Reporting needed repairs of equipment and appropriate handling of clean and dirty linen supplies. Maintain utility rooms on inpatient unit, assist staff in cleaning dirty utility room and patient care items.
- Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
- Utilizes available resources to maintain competencies through attendance in college credit courses, outside in-service, and/or viewing of practice related in-services in addition to mandatory offerings.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and service appropriate to the ages of patients served under the direction of an RN or LPN.
- Demonstrates and utilizes knowledge of infection control principles and universal precautions.
- Performs limited clerical duties such as answering telephone, assembling charts, filing dictation and patient care information in the patient medical record. Disassemble discharged patient records, and shred confidential information as requested.
- 16. Other activities in support of the nursing staff, such as passing water, changing sharps containers, making copies of records for transfer, and other duties as appropriate.
- When Staffing needs dictate, may work an alternate shift or be scheduled to work on an on-call basis. Employees scheduled on call must report within 30 minutes of receiving a call. Operating Room staff must report within 20 minutes of receiving a call.
EDUCATION: High School diploma or equivalency.
EXPERIENCE: One month.
CONTACTS: Frequent contact with patients, employees, visitors and physicians.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Lifts, transports patients and furniture, stands and walks most of the day.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Frequent exposure to disagreeable odors, cuts, burns, infections, communicable diseases, strains, injuries from patients.
