Come join a dynamic team as an Assistant or Senior Assistant City Attorney for the City of Burbank. Admission to the Bar of the State of California is required and a minimum of five years’ experience in advisory and/or transactional legal work. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in one or more of the following areas: municipal law, land use/real property, CEQA review, housing, public works construction, drafting regulatory ordinances, public works construction procurement and compliance, and/or any other area of law that will prove beneficial to a municipal practice. The position primarily involves transactional/advisory work to City departments, City Council, and staffing various boards and commissions. A broad range of municipal law related assignments such as drafting/reviewing contracts, resolutions and ordinances and giving advice concerning Brown Act, Public Records Act and conflict of interest. Candidates should either have a working knowledge of these topics or be prepared to quickly develop such knowledge. Candidates must have excellent legal writing, research, analysis, and communication skills, and be able to work independently while also collaborating as part of a team . Supervises, trains, and evaluates employees; manages caseloads and assures proper distribution of work among professional staff; makes effective recommendations regarding hiring, promotions, and transfers; effectively recommends disciplinary action as needed, up to and including termination; performs legal research and prepares the more complex legal opinions for the governing body, boards, commissions, and departments; gives legal advice to City officials and department managers; drafts a variety of legal instruments; represents the City and City officials in litigation from initial preparation through the appeals process; investigates the more serious claims and complaints by or against the City; recommends action and takes such action as is necessary; handles correspondence and holds interview, telephone conversations, conferences and negotiations in performing legal duties; attends meetings of the Council, boards, commissions, and committees, when required; drafts proposed charter amendments; advises and assists in preparing for elections; prepares petitions for sewer and street improvements and forms for easements, bonds, complaints, notices and assessment proceedings; may be required to assist in handling criminal matters, and when so assigned, shall have the same rights, powers, duties and immunities of a City prosecutor; drives on City business.
