Job Title: Director of Accounting
Department: Client ServicesLocation: Houston, TX (Hybrid)Reports To: CEOSummary:The Director of Accounting is a working manager responsible for both delivering accounting services to their own portfolio of clients and leading a small team to ensure timely, accurate service delivery across all client engagements. This role requires strong accounting skills, excellent project management abilities, and the discipline to meet deadlines consistently while holding others accountable to the same standards.
Responsibilities:A. Client Accounting Services (Own Portfolio)Manage a portfolio of clients, serving as their primary accountant and point of contact.Perform monthly bookkeeping tasks including:Bank and credit card reconciliationsJournal entries, accruals, and adjustmentsMonth-end and year-end closing proceduresPrepare and deliver monthly financial statements to clients.Process client payroll accurately and on schedule.Prepare and review accounts payable (AP) reports.Prepare and review accounts receivable (AR) reports.Review expense categories for accuracy and consistency month over month.Lead software implementations for clients, including setup, configuration, and training on accounting systems.Develop and implement accounting processes and workflows tailored to client needs.Conduct regular client-facing meetings to review financials, discuss deliverables, and address questions or concerns.Communicate proactively with clients regarding deadlines, deliverables, and any issues.Coordinate with external tax accountants on client tax filings as needed.B. Quality Assurance and OversightOversee the accuracy of all bookkeeping performed by team members before client delivery.Review and approve financial statements prepared by staff.Review payroll processing completed by team members for accuracy and compliance.Review AP and AR reports prepared by staff for completeness and accuracy.Identify and correct errors before deliverables are sent to clients.Ensure compliance with company standards, procedures, and accounting best practices.C. Team Leadership and AccountabilityManage and supervise a team of 2-3 direct reports, including remote/overseas team members.Conduct regular check-ins with team members to monitor progress, provide feedback, and address obstacles.Hold team members accountable to deadlines and quality standards through clear expectations and consistent follow-up.Provide training, coaching, and mentoring to support team development.Coordinate work across time zones to ensure seamless collaboration with remote staff.D. Project Management and Workflow OversightTrack all client deliverables—both personal and team—and ensure deadlines are consistently met.Manage project timelines using the company's project management system (Double).Identify bottlenecks and implement solutions to improve workflow efficiency.Recommend and implement process improvements to increase team productivity.Ensure proper documentation and organization of client files and work papers.Redistribute workload as needed to ensure all deadlines are met.E. Client Communication and EscalationHandle escalated client concerns from team members and work to resolve issues promptly.Ensure all client interactions—personal and team—are professional, courteous, and timely.Step in to support team members on complex client situations as needed.F. Professional DevelopmentMaintain required Continuing Professional Education (CPE) hours in accordance with certification and licensing standards.Stay current with accounting regulations, software updates, and industry best practices.Pursue ongoing professional development to enhance skills in financial management, leadership, and client advisory services.Qualifications:Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting required.Experience: 5-7 years of accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or team lead role required.Accounting Skills: Strong working knowledge of bookkeeping, reconciliations, financial statement preparation, payroll processing, and AP/AR management.Software Implementation: Experience implementing or configuring accounting software for clients is a plus.Project Management: Demonstrated ability to manage multiple clients and projects simultaneously while meeting all deadlines.Reliability: Consistent attendance and dependability are essential for this role.Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills for client and team interactions.Organization: Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.Technology: Proficiency with QuickBooks Online required.
