About This Position

Job Summary: Under the general supervision from the Municipal Court Administrator, the Municipal Court Clerk performs a wide variety of clerical duties in support of the Municipal Court including the initiation, processing, and maintenance of legal documents, correspondence, and statistics; coordination of the docket with the Municipal Judge, City Attorney and other attorneys; maintaining and monitoring all payment plans; receiving and posting payments for fines and bond; and providing information and assistance to the public.
Education/Training/Experience Requirements:
1. Minimum of one year of administrative or clerical experience required.
2. Municipal Court experience preferred.
3. High School diploma or G.E.D.
4. Possession of a Level 1 Certified Municipal Court Clerk Certification from Texas Court Clerks Association or ability to obtain within one year of employment, and ability to maintain certification during term of employment.
5. A valid Texas driver’s license.
Essential Job Functions:
1. Prepares court dockets for citations issued by the Police Department; processes necessary documentation for each case; files dockets according to status; and calls insurance companies to verify auto coverage for dismissal of ‘no insurance’ citations.
2. Assists customers in person and on the telephone.
3. Coordinates court activities with the Municipal Court Judge, Attorneys, and City staff as required.
4. Provides information to individuals concerning their citations, including payment options and community service; provides information to individuals over the phone and in person concerning ways to resolve a citation such as driver safety courses, deferred disposition requirements, and/or the appeal process.
5. Notifies defendants of mandatory court appearances and the penalties for failure to show in court; informs the defendants of Municipal Court procedures.
6. Provides all case documents, including bonds and transcripts of the court proceedings, to the County Court or Justice of the Peace upon appeal of a case; processes capiases and arrest warrants for the Municipal Court Judge.
7. Receives and posts payments for fines and bonds; accepts appearance bonds; transmits fines accepted to the Municipal Judge for case disposition.
8. Prepares all warrants and subpoenas.
9. Maintains accurate records for the court which include dockets, minutes of court proceedings, fee book, receipt books, and a file of prior violators.
10. Transfers all closed case dockets to storage boxes and labels with appropriate destruction date.
11. Performs other related duties as required.

5. Ability to interpret and explain Municipal Court policies and procedures.
6. Ability to work flexible and extended hours to accommodate City needs.
Physical Demands/Work Environment: Lifting up to 25 pounds occasionally. Subject to standing, sitting, walking, climbing, bending, squatting, kneeling and working in cramped and strained positions for long periods of time to perform job scope.
