JOB SUMMARY

Responsible for microscopic examinations of cells and other duties, as directed by the pathologists. Processes all specimens submitted for Pap testing. Accessions all specimens for screening. Screens all Pap tests and other non-GYN specimens to observe minute abnormalities. Referral of any abnormal findings to a pathologist for review. Ensures the high quality readings of microscopic slides, in an expeditious manner that promotes cost containment. Responsible for recognizing results or problems that require referral to the pathologist. Maintains performance improvement activities within the department and participates in CQI activities. Provides input regarding operational budget for the department

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Demonstrates knowledge regarding slide results in relationship to norms for neonate through the geriatric population.


• Demonstrates ability to perform cytotechnology testing on all specimens submitted for cytotechnology reading and review.


• Is able to make interpretations of cytology specimens.


• Demonstrates ability to order supplies and equipment required for cytotechnology duties.


• Demonstrates ability to review test results to ensure quality control. Establishes a system where work being done and test results are checked by supervisory staff for accuracy and timeliness to aid the physician in providing optimal patient care.


• Demonstrates knowledge of new testing methods, products and instrumentation; remains informed on all current technologies.


• Treats any patient and/or family member (who presents as surrogate decision maker and has demonstrated right to information) with respect and dignity, should they inquire about cytology readings.


• Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.


• Interacts professionally with all department members, physicians, staff, the administrative team and the Pathologists.


• Communicates appropriately and clearly to physicians, department managers, staff, the administrative team and the Pathologists.


• Coordinates all work efforts to ensure patient/physician needs are met and hospital policy is followed.


• Ensures that the physical plan and environmental conditions of the cytology work area are appropriate for the testing performed.


• Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.


• Maintains a good working relationship both within the pathology department and with other departments.


• Consults other departments, as appropriate, to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities.


• Meets current documentation standards and policies.


• Collaborates with other departments, as appropriate, to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs.


• Performs other duties, within the cytotechnologist’s scope of knowledge and level of licensure, as requested by the pathologists and laboratory manager.


• Major duties: examines and evaluates cells samples for presence or absence of normal or abnormal cellular patterns, presence of microorganisms, inflammatory reactions, endocrinopathies, benign changes, pre-malignant changes, neoplasia, and cellular responses to therapeutic agents. Assesses non-malignant or borderline cellular changes of benign lesions and determines type, e.g., inflammatory versus dysplasia versus hyperplasia, and/or determines possible cause. Evaluates dysplastic changes and determines grade or severity of process and cell type. Assesses malignant cell morphology and on the basis of diagnostic criteria, determines cell or tissue type, differentiation of neoplasm, and when possible, the primary site of neoplasm.


• Prepares written cytopathologic diagnostic reports using recognized cytopathologic / histopathologic terminology.


• Relates cytomorphologic changes to clinical data.


• Evaluates and / or determines the proper technical procedure appropriate in the preparation of specific cytology specimens.


• Conveys information to those professionals directly responsible for patient care in regard to proper collection methods, transportation of specimens, and interpretation of reports.


• Receives specimens and accompanying requisition reviewing for completeness and accuracy.


• Accession specimens, determining adequacy and quality of specimen prior to recording the data in appropriate logbook.


• Processes and prepares all specimens for cytodiagnostic procedures while controlling physical conditions and responding to time factors to insure that physiological state of the specimen is maintained. This includes the use of the centrifuge, liquid based techniques, smear techniques, and cell block methods.


• Utilizes appropriate fixation and staining techniques to include but not limited to anicolaou staining techniques. Labels slides according to professional quality control methods.


• Develops and maintains procedures for introduction into the procedure manual. Modifies existing procedures as they need change.


• Acknowledges technical limitations and various possibilities for procedural errors in cytopreparation. Takes necessary corrective action.


• Evaluates, prepares, and selects reagents, supplies, and equipment; establish and maintain inventory.


• Operates, maintains, and troubleshoots equipment in cytopathology laboratory.


• Establishes and defines quality control procedures to determine accuracy of cytological diagnosis, quality, and appropriateness of cytopreparatory techniques.


• Assures proper storage and maintenance of cytology records; e.g., slide files, statistics, and correlation of cytology/histology results.


• Assists with specimen collection and fine needle aspiration biopsies


• Maintains cytotechnologist screening workload statistics and other workload data using designated recording method.


• Instructs new employees and students in cytopreparatory techniques and diagnostic criteria.


• Remains current in the field by review of cytologic periodicals, attending professional society meetings and other continuing education programs as appropriate.


• Evaluates, prepares, and selects reagents, supplies, and equipment; establish and maintain inventory.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education / Experience / License and Certifications

• Baccalaureate degree and successful completion of twelve-month CAAHEP-accredited cytotechnology program, required.


• Current Cytotechnologist certification indicating completion of approved schooling as prescribed by the College of American Pathologists (ASCP) or ASCP examination eligible, required.

Additional Skills

• Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.


• Basic computer knowledge.


• Proficiency in use of cytology equipment and testing.
