Head Varsity Softball Coach in TAMPA, Florida at Academy of the Holy Names of Florida

Position Overview

Academy of the Holy Names (AHN) is seeking an experienced, student-centered Head Varsity Softball Coach to lead and develop its high school softball program.

The Head Varsity Softball Coach is responsible for the overall leadership, organization, coaching, and development of the varsity program and assisting the growth of sub-varsity and middle school programs. The successful candidate will work to establish a positive and competitive team culture, develop student-athletes both on and off the field, integrate the AHN mission, and represent Academy of the Holy Names with professionalism and integrity.

The Head Coach will work closely with the Athletic Director, athletics staff, assistant coaches, student-athletes, families, and school administration to provide a high-quality athletic experience consistent with the mission and values of AHN.

Responsibilities

• Lead, organize, and manage the AHN Varsity Softball program.
• Establish a positive, competitive, inclusive, and team-oriented culture.
• Plan and conduct effective practices focused on individual and team development.
• Teach and develop softball fundamentals, strategy, game awareness, and position-specific skills.
• Prepare the team for regular-season, district, and postseason competition.
• Manage game-day decisions, including lineups, substitutions, pitching, defensive alignment, and strategy.
• Establish clear expectations for effort, attendance, conduct, sportsmanship, teamwork, and accountability.
• Evaluate student-athlete performance and provide consistent, constructive feedback.
• Support the academic success and overall well-being of student-athletes.
• Develop strong, professional relationships with student-athletes and their families.
• Communicate effectively and consistently with student-athletes, families, the Athletic Director, Assistant Athletic Director, and Athletic Trainer.
• Follow AHN communication procedures and utilize designated school communication platforms.
• Work collaboratively with assistants and lower-level coaches to support a consistent softball program.
• Coordinate with the athletic department regarding scheduling, transportation, facilities, equipment, officials, tournaments, and program needs.
• Maintain appropriate team records, equipment, uniforms, and program resources.
• Follow all AHN policies and applicable FHSAA rules and regulations.
• Follow all athletic training, medical, injury-management, emergency action, and student-safety procedures.
• Complete and maintain all required Academy of the Holy Names, FHSAA, and coaching certifications and professional development.
• Represent Academy of the Holy Names positively and professionally at all practices, competitions, and school activities.
• Provide timely game results and relevant program information to the media and Athletic Department.
• Participate in required athletics department meetings and school activities.
• Attend out-of-season activities, displaying a sense of pride in all programs.

Qualifications

Required

• Varsity coaching experience in softball at the high school or collegiate level.
• Strong knowledge of softball fundamentals, strategy, player development, and game management.
• Demonstrated ability to lead, teach, motivate, and develop high school student-athletes.
• Strong communication, organization, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
• Commitment to student-athlete development, sportsmanship, and character development.
• Ability to work collaboratively with school administrators, coaches, faculty, families, and students.
• A deep understanding of and commitment to the mission and values of the Academy of the Holy Names, with the ability to intentionally integrate them into coaching, student-athlete development, team culture, and the overall softball program.
• Ability to meet all AHN and FHSAA requirements for employment and coaching.

Preferred

• Previous varsity head coaching experience.
• Collegiate playing or coaching experience.
• Experience developing a softball program across multiple levels.
• Experience in an independent school or college-preparatory environment.
• Relevant coaching certifications or professional development.
• Experience with strength and conditioning, player development, or sport performance programming.
