Job Summary

The Pharmacy Director will be responsible for the overall operation of the pharmacy department. The position requires extensive contact with the administrator, medical staff, nursing service staff, hospital staff, and non-hospital contractors (vendors, auditors).

Essential Functions

Ensures safe, appropriate, cost-effective medication therapies for patients according to established policies, procedures, and protocols:

  • Develops and enforces policies and procedures that promote safe, appropriate and cost-effective medication use.
  • Develops and maintains a medical staff-approved formulary.
  • Supervises medication storage and preparation areas throughout the facility; establishes specifications for the safe and secure storage of medications, chemicals, and biologicals.
  • Facilitates the implementation and maintenance of safe medication use processes throughout the organization.
  • Provides for the educational needs of healthcare professionals, patients, and their families.
  • Ensures maintenance of an adequate medication supply and integrity of the medication supply; establishes specifications for the procurement of medications, chemicals, and biologicals.
  • Ensures strict control and accountability for medications dispensed to patients or distributed to floor stock.
  • Ensures adequate control and documentation of controlled substances.
  • Ensures applicable CE records and licensure are maintained in department files.
  • Contributes to the quality and effective operation of the department:
  • Supervises all pharmacy personnel; recruits, interviews, promotes, disciplines, and terminates pharmacy staff.
  • Develops job descriptions and performance standards; evaluates, and counsels staff members on their performance.
  • Prepares work schedules and monitors workload statistics; maintains appropriate staffing levels that match workload and promote patient safety.
  • Provides for the educational needs of the pharmacy staff.
  • Prepares a pharmacy budget annually.
  • Reviews monthly financial statistics and plans expenditures within budget guidelines.
  • Monitors and justifies all expenses exceeding budgeted targets.
  • Ensures preparation and submission of patient charges and financial reports to administration in accordance with policy.
  • Administers reports, documents, payroll records, statistical surveys, and other required data.
  • Ensures compliance with health- system policies and procedures that apply to pharmacy services as well as with all applicable federal/ state/local laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Ensures that compounding meets state regulations and USP chapters <795> and <797>
  • Integrates the department into the organization’s primary functions:
  • Develops and implements a strategic plan for the pharmacy that supports the mission and goals of the organization.
  • Develops and implements pharmacy services in collaboration with associated department services.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains a program that improves the quality of pharmacy services, improves medication-use safety, and supports the quality improvement plan of the organization.
  • Participate in all committees/functions required by the organization, including the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
  • Establishes productive, collaborative relationships with staff members and within the community.
  • Maintains competence required for current job title/position:
  • Maintains current pharmacist licensure.
  • Attends management meetings.
  • Sustains professional competence and promotes development through participation in in-services, workshops, seminars, and professional organizations.
  • Completes all competence/skills assessment requirements.
  • Ensures compliance with regulations and standards required for daily pharmacy operations.

  • Ensures all licenses and permits for pharmacy operations (e.g., State Board of Pharmacy permit, DEA permit and controlled substance license) are current and in good standing.
  • Implements processes to minimize the diversion of controlled substances and other drugs as specified in the Pharmacy Solutions Regulatory Compliance Plan.
  • Ensures all controlled substances are locked and other drugs secured within the facility.
  • Maintains internal audit process for accuracy and completeness of controlled substance records.
  • Follows processes for record keeping and retention.
  • Ensures all assigned Regulatory Competencies have been completed for the pharmacy staff.
  • Other Duties

    Performs all staff pharmacist duties when needed.

    Minimum Education/Certifications

    • Pharmacy Degree from accredited School of Pharmacy
    • Must have and maintain a current license from the NJ State Board of Pharmacy.

    Minimum Work Experience

    • At least three years of experience in a hospital setting with management and supervisory responsibility.

    Physical Demands Analysis:

    • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
    • Prolonged periods of standing may be required.
    • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
