The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and Vice President, Medical Group (CHMG) serves as a senior clinical executive for CalvertHealth, providing strategic leadership and oversight of all provider services across the health system.
This role is responsible for advancing clinical quality, patient safety, physician engagement, and care delivery integration. As a key member of the executive leadership team, the CMO partners with administrative and clinical leaders to develop and execute physician and clinical strategies aligned with organizational priorities.
The position includes direct leadership of employed physicians and advanced practice providers within CalvertHealth Medical Group, while fostering strong collaboration with affiliated and contracted providers.
This role is structured with approximately 60% focus on CMO responsibilities and 40% dedicated to Medical Group leadership, with the opportunity to maintain a limited outpatient clinical practice.
Job Duties:- Provides executive leadership for clinical quality, patient safety, and provider performance across the health system, ensuring delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care
- Develops and implements clinical quality and patient safety strategies, including establishment of goals, metrics, and performance targets
- Partners with executive leadership (CEO, CNO, Operations, Quality, and Strategy) to drive continuous improvement in clinical and operational outcomes
- Fosters strong engagement and alignment among employed, affiliated, and contracted physicians
- Provides strategic and operational leadership for CalvertHealth Medical Group, ensuring it operates as an integrated, high-performing component of the health system
- Collaborates with the SVP of Strategy & Transformation to enhance access, improve patient experience, and achieve financial and operational goals
- Leads efforts to optimize physician practice operations, including access, throughput, and care coordination
- Supports Medical Staff leadership, including the Chief of Staff and Medical Executive Committee, in advancing quality, governance, and physician performance
- Provides guidance on credentialing, privileging, peer review, and medical staff affairs
- Serves as an ex-officio member of medical staff committees to ensure alignment with organizational goals
- Collaborates on strategic service line development and growth initiatives, including surgical services, women’s health, orthopedics, oncology, digestive health, and weight management
- Supports expansion of community access points and physician alignment strategies
- Provides oversight of contracted physician services (hospitalists, intensivists, anesthesiology, radiology, emergency medicine) to ensure quality, efficiency, and alignment with system goals
- Partners with operations leadership to ensure appropriate coverage, patient throughput, and coordination of care
- Works collaboratively with IT and clinical informatics to advance adoption and optimization of clinical technologies
- Partners with Human Resources and physician leadership to support provider recruitment, retention, and development
- Promotes a culture of professionalism, accountability, and adherence to the organization’s Code of Conduct
- Ensures compliance with all regulatory, accreditation, and legal requirements
- Serves as Administrator on Call as scheduled
- MD or DO from an accredited medical school with current board certification
- Eligible for or currently holding medical licensure in the State of Maryland
- Minimum of five (5) years of progressive physician leadership experience (e.g., CMO, VP Medical Affairs, Medical Director, or equivalent)
- Demonstrated success in leading clinical quality improvement, physician engagement, and operational performance initiatives
- Strong communication and leadership skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across all levels of the organization
- Advanced degree in healthcare administration, business administration, or related field preferred
