Executive Director

Who We Are:

Founded in 1907, the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) is a nonpartisan organization that serves the attorneys general of the 56 states, territories, and the District of Columbia. NAAG provides a collaborative forum for legal and law enforcement professionals to address critical issues and advance justice nationwide.

Our mission is to support attorneys general by:

  • Facilitating bipartisan collaboration on multistate litigation, investigations, and other policies and initiatives.
  • Promoting the exchange of trusted, nonpartisan information and expertise.
  • Delivering high-quality training, research, and analysis to empower attorneys general and their teams.

We are looking for a Executive Director to join our team.

The Job Brief:

NAAG is seeking a visionary Executive Director to provide overall leadership, strategic direction, and operational management of the organization. Reporting to the Executive Committee, this role requires active management, including the oversight of daily operations, financial management, staff leadership, and program execution while advancing NAAG’s mission. The Executive Director serves as a key liaison to government entities, supports the attorney general community, and ensures effective collaboration and communication across related stakeholders. The Executive Director leads a team of approximately 55 staff, manages budgeting and investments, and oversees legal and programmatic work. The ideal candidate is a strategic, collaborative leader with strong integrity, public service commitment, and the ability to navigate complex issues. The position requires significant travel. The position is based in Washington, D.C., and there is a strong preference that the Executive Director be based in Washington, D.C. full-time, or substantially all of the time.

The Executive Director reports to the Executive Committee.

  • Demonstrated skill in bringing together and empowering people of all different backgrounds and building teams that reflect myriad perspectives and experiences.
  • Ability to establish/maintain a climate of excellence through effective leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and analyze problems and make well-informed and timely decisions with conclusions based upon available information.
  • Conscientiousness with high energy in carrying out responsibilities.
  • Strong work ethic and willingness to lead by example.
  • Ability to contribute across all areas of the organization, including programming, training, operations, and administration.

Required Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
  • Active bar membership in a U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Minimum of fifteen years of professional/legal experience, preferably within an attorney general’s office, district attorney’s office, U.S. Attorney’s office, military JAG, or a related government agency.
  • Senior management/executive leadership, and non-profit experience is preferred.
  • Experience in mission-focused organizations of substantial complexity.
  • Proven ability to establish and operationalize new initiatives.

Location:

NAAG is headquartered in Washington, D.C.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Salary: $325,000 starting salary (negotiable) and is commensurate with experience and budget availability.
