VP of Engineering - Applications

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a VP of Engineering - Applications based in the United States.

As VP of Engineering - Applications, you will lead the end-user-facing engineering organization and help scale the company’s software development capabilities as its customer base and market presence grow. You will oversee roughly half of the engineering organization, guiding multiple development squads and strengthening technical execution, talent, and engineering practices. The role combines strategic leadership with hands-on technical depth across distributed computing, cloud infrastructure, and enterprise software development. You will work with modern technologies including Java, Kotlin, Python, TypeScript/React, Kubernetes, AWS, and Azure. You’ll operate in a highly collaborative, globally distributed, remote-first environment where curiosity, transparency, and continuous improvement are deeply valued. Your leadership will directly influence product quality, engineering velocity, team development, and the ability to deliver exceptional experiences for industrial customers.

Accountabilities:
  • Lead the end-user-facing engineering squads, representing approximately half of the overall engineering organization, while supporting continued growth in engineering capacity and organizational maturity.
  • Provide strategic and technical leadership across software development, ensuring teams maintain strong engineering practices and consistently deliver high-quality products.
  • Develop, mentor, and inspire engineering leaders and individual contributors, creating an environment where people can grow, experiment, learn from mistakes, and perform at their best.
  • Strengthen engineering processes across the full software development lifecycle, including discovery, architecture, design, development, quality assurance, CI/CD, deployment, and production support.
  • Guide teams working on complex distributed systems, cloud-based applications, streaming calculations, storage, and large-scale data processing.
  • Help evolve engineering architecture and technical capabilities across JVM-based technologies, Python, TypeScript/React, C#/.NET, Kubernetes, AWS, and Azure.
  • Partner across engineering and business functions to align technical priorities, product goals, customer needs, and organizational strategy.
  • Establish clear direction while empowering engineering leaders and teams to make decisions independently and take ownership of outcomes.
  • Identify opportunities to improve development practices, engineering efficiency, collaboration, and product delivery through agile approaches such as Scrumban.
  • Foster a culture of curiosity, knowledge sharing, collaboration, and continuous learning, while actively encouraging teams to adopt new technologies and approaches.
  • Manage and resolve conflicts effectively across individuals, engineering teams, leadership groups, and peer functions.
  • Maintain clear, reliable communication with executives, engineering leaders, and broader stakeholders, providing transparency around priorities, risks, progress, and decisions.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies, including AI-enabled developer tooling and product capabilities, and help the organization thoughtfully evaluate their opportunities and challenges.
  • Periodically travel to spend time with distributed teams and colleagues and strengthen face-to-face relationships.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, a related technical discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Proven experience leading and scaling technical engineering organizations, including responsibility for multiple teams and engineering leaders.
  • Strong hands-on technical background with the ability to remain technically credible and contribute meaningfully to engineering decisions while operating at an executive leadership level.
  • Deep experience with distributed computing and a strong understanding of modern cloud ecosystems and architectures.
  • Extensive knowledge of enterprise software development lifecycles, including Agile methodologies, discovery, design, development, quality assurance, CI/CD, deployment, and support.
  • Experience with modern software technologies such as Java, Kotlin, Python, TypeScript/React, C#/.NET, Kubernetes, AWS, and/or Azure is highly relevant.
  • Strong understanding of scalable SaaS architectures and complex data-processing or distributed systems environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to build, mentor, and retain high-performing engineering teams while developing future leaders.
  • Inspiring, empathetic, humble, and transparent leadership style, with the ability to influence effectively without relying solely on organizational authority.
  • Strong coaching and mentoring capabilities, with a focus on providing clear direction while giving teams autonomy to learn, experiment, and improve.
  • Excellent conflict-resolution skills and the ability to navigate disagreements constructively across teams, leaders, and peers.
  • High attention to detail, strong organizational discipline, dependable communication, and the ability to maintain composure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong curiosity and a commitment to continuous learning, knowledge sharing, and teaching others.
  • Ability to balance the demands of senior leadership with sustainable work-life practices.
  • Comfortable working effectively in a fully distributed, remote-first environment across compatible time zones.
  • Willingness to travel periodically for team and company meetings.
  • Authorization to work in the country where you reside; US-based candidates must be authorized to work in the United States, with no sponsorship available for US F-1 or H-1B visas.
Benefits
  • Competitive compensation package, including a $290,000 USD base salary for US-based employees, with local adjustments for other countries.
  • Competitive salary plus commission/incentive opportunities.
  • Fully remote, remote-first work environment.
  • 12 weeks of paid family leave.
  • Unlimited paid time off.
  • Medical benefits.
  • Voluntary vision and dental coverage, including orthodontic benefits.
  • Group term life insurance.
  • Short-term and long-term disability insurance with pre-tax benefit options.
  • Internet and mobile phone reimbursements.
  • Generous home office allowance.
  • Vacation bonus program.
  • Employee Assistance Program.
  • Collaborative, highly skilled, and supportive global team environment.
  • Pet-friendly remote work culture.
  • Opportunities to work with advanced cloud, distributed computing, AI, and enterprise software technologies.
  • Periodic opportunities for in-person collaboration with colleagues and teams.
  • Equal employment opportunities and an inclusive workplace committed to respecting diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
