Job Description

Position Summary

As the Senior Electrical Engineer in Transmission Planning, you are responsible for analyzing the Bulk Electric System/Bulk Power System (BES/BPS), leading the work of technical groups responsible for ensuring the dependability and security of the BES/BPS to serve power system demands under stressed conditions, performing simulations using commercially available software, and supporting activities related to the NPCC and ERO work plans.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the evaluations of the BES/BPS in support of NPCC and ERO Enterprise activities.
  • Perform steady-state, transient stability and dynamic analyses using commercially available software.
  • Oversee the work of NPCC technical groups charged with conducting NPCC region-wide BES/BPS studies, including but not limited to:
    • NPCC Overall Transmission Assessment.
    • NPCC Underfrequency Load Shedding Program Adequacy Assessment.
    • Applicability and usage of various dynamic load models in the NPCC region-wide BES/BPS assessments.
  • Present results of NPCC BES/BPS studies at NPCC committees, task forces, and working groups.
  • Participate in providing NPCC regional perspectives to the ERO and industry stakeholders.
  • Develop relationships with NPCC Members, NERC, Regional Entity, and stakeholder personnel to enhance coordination efforts and improve existing processes and procedures.
  • Provide guidance and training to other engineers, as required.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) with concentration in electric power systems.
  • Minimum 8 years of direct experience in conducting utility-scale transmission planning, interconnection studies, and power system modeling.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of active and reactive power flow, voltage control, transient stability, fault calculations, and frequency response of the BES/BPS.
  • Competent and knowledgeable in the following technical aspects, including but not limited to:
    • Transmission and resource adequacy planning.
    • Modeling of loads and Inverter-Based Resources (IBRs) such as wind, utility-scale solar, and Battery Energy Storage systems in transient stability analysis.
    • Wide-area power system studies.
    • Steady state and transient stability studies.
    • Short circuit analyses.
    • NERC planning and modeling standards.
  • Proficiency with the use of power system simulation software tools such as Siemens PSS/E, Power World, or GE-PSLF to conduct load flow, contingency analysis (N-1, N-2 conditions, etc.), and transient stability evaluations. Ability to program in Python to automate large-scale batch simulations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Power Systems Engineering.
  • Experience performing electromagnetic transient (EMT) studies using PSCAD or EMTP to evaluate impact of large loads, IBRs, localized grid phenomena, control interactions and sub-synchronous resonance.

Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
