Job Description
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Financial Accountant based in Australia.
This is a senior accounting role within a rapidly scaling SaaS environment, focused on maintaining accurate, reliable, and audit-ready financial records.
You will take ownership of revenue recognition, core month-end journals, reconciliations, and the overall close process across multiple entities.
The role combines hands-on technical accounting with process improvement, data quality, tax and audit support, and team leadership.
You will be a key accounting partner to finance, tax, compliance, business intelligence, and external audit stakeholders.
A strong emphasis is placed on sound accounting judgment, particularly around revenue recognition, and on building scalable processes that can support continued growth.
You will also lead a small offshore finance team, setting quality standards, developing capability, and ensuring consistent execution across time zones.
This opportunity is well suited to a CA/CPA professional who is highly autonomous, detail-oriented, commercially minded, and energized by the pace and ownership of a high-growth technology business.
- Own revenue recognition entries each reporting period, applying the established revenue recognition policy independently and escalating complex or unusual accounting judgments with clear recommendations.
- Prepare and post month-end journals, including accruals, prepayments, and non-routine entries, supported by clear and complete documentation.
- Run the month-end close process using Asana, tracking deadlines, following up outstanding actions, escalating blockers early, and ensuring close is completed by WD+6.
- Complete account reconciliations and close activities to a high standard, requiring minimal review, and provide accurate variance analysis and commentary for management reporting.
- Review journals and reconciliations prepared by less experienced team members, providing constructive coaching and correcting root causes rather than simply fixing errors.
- Oversee the fixed asset register and intercompany reconciliations across multiple entities, including monthly reconciliation and sign-off against the general ledger.
- Serve as the accounting-side reference point for tax and compliance activities, preparing workpapers, reconciliations, and supporting documentation required for external audits.
- Maintain the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of financial data within Xero for the assigned ledgers.
- Partner with business intelligence stakeholders to ensure clean, reconciled accounting data flows effectively into reporting and analytics.
- Design scalable accounting processes and document them through clear standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Identify and implement practical AI use cases that reduce manual effort, improve efficiency, and strengthen the month-end close process.
- Lead a small offshore finance team by setting clear expectations for quality and turnaround times, developing technical capability, providing direct feedback, and maintaining regular one-to-one meetings across time zones.
- Support continuous improvement of accounting controls, workflows, and reporting processes as the business scales.
- CA or CPA qualified, or actively working toward a relevant professional accounting qualification.
- 5+ years of experience in a technical accounting role with strong exposure to revenue recognition, month-end close, and multi-entity reconciliations.
- Experience in a subscription, SaaS, technology, or similarly complex business environment is highly desirable.
- Deep, hands-on experience with Xero and advanced proficiency in Excel or Google Sheets for reconciliations, analysis, and close workpapers.
- Proven experience reviewing and improving the work of junior or offshore accounting professionals, including setting standards, providing feedback, and knowing when to intervene.
- Working understanding of tax treatment and compliance requirements, with sufficient knowledge to act as an accounting reference point while partnering with dedicated tax specialists.
- Strong technical accounting judgment and confidence making, documenting, and defending accounting treatment decisions.
- Ability to approach escalations with a considered recommendation and supporting analysis rather than simply raising a question.
- Highly methodical, self-managing, and consistent, with the ability to execute month-end responsibilities accurately with limited supervision.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high standards of financial data quality and integrity.
- Ability to explain accounting concepts and treatment clearly to non-finance stakeholders.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across finance, tax, compliance, BI, audit, and offshore teams.
- Comfortable working across time zones and collaborating with geographically distributed colleagues.
- Adaptable, hands-on, and comfortable operating in a fast-paced scale-up environment where processes continue to evolve.
- Growth-oriented mindset with a willingness to improve existing processes and take ownership of new challenges.
- Competitive compensation aligned with experience and market expectations.
- Remote, hybrid, and flexible working options.
- Opportunity to work from Australia, with Melbourne or Sydney particularly suited to the role.
- International team spanning APAC, North America, and EMEA.
- Opportunity to join a rapidly scaling SaaS business at an exciting stage of growth.
- Significant ownership and the opportunity to directly influence accounting processes and operational improvements.
- Exposure to AI-powered finance automation and opportunities to apply AI to accounting workflows.
- Opportunities for professional growth and development in a high-growth technology environment.
- Collaborative, global, and growth-oriented culture.
- Opportunity to lead and develop an offshore finance team.
- Work on finance operations supporting a rapidly expanding international business.
- Strong employee engagement and a culture focused on meaningful impact, ownership, and continuous improvement.
