About This Position
Beacon Health System is hiring a Part Time day shift Mental Health Technician for our Center for Behavioral Medicine at Elkhart General Hospital in Elkhart, IN.
Type: Part-Time/FTE .75 (30 hrs/wk)

Elkhart General Hospital is a not-for-profit hospital located in Elkhart, Indiana. What You’ll Do As a Behavioral Medicine Mental Health Technician, you’ll report to the Manager of Patient Care Services. Under the direction of a Registered Nurse or other designated authority, you will facilitate the maintenance of the therapeutic environment and assist patients with daily living activities. You will function as a group leader and assist with patients’ recreational and social activities. You will observe and report patients’ behavior patterns and intervene as required. You receive guests, answer the telephone, and facilitate productive communications with patients, families, physicians and team members. Behavioral Medicine Mental Health Technician Job Responsibilities
- Supports a safe, therapeutic behavioral health environment as part of the interdisciplinary team.
- Orients patients to the unit, reviews rules, and assists with admissions and belongings.
- Observes, documents, and reports patient behavior; communicates therapeutically and manages crises appropriately.
- Maintains unit safety, including de‑escalation and restraint per legal and clinical standards.
- Assists with patient care, including ADLs, vital signs, specimens, ECT support, and ongoing monitoring.
- Leads or assists with therapeutic, recreational, and educational activities.
- Supports care planning, multidisciplinary meetings, and clinical documentation. Manages clerical tasks such as charts, charges, phone communication, and visitor reception while ensuring patient privacy and dignity.

As a Mental Health Tech, you demonstrate good interpersonal skills necessary to deal tactfully and effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds and in crisis situations.
You have the ability to quickly and appropriately react to crisis situations and accept direction and responsibility for the care of patient under treatment for alcohol abuse, drug abuse and psychiatric disorders.
You have the knowledge to read, legibly print or write, correctly spell and understand medical and non-medical terms and follow verbal and written instructions.
You’re proficient in basic computer skills and sufficient keyboarding skills to complete the work assigned accurately and in a reasonable amount of time.
You have the ability to work independently, take initiative and are self-motivated.

Successful completion of a High School Diploma or equivalent
- Previous clerical or patient care experience desired.
- Nurse Assistant certification preferred. Previous successful experience as a psychiatric technician or successful completion of at least two courses in psychology or counseling at an accredited college or university preferred.
