We are seeking a highly organized and motivated Instructional Laboratory Technician to support undergraduate teaching laboratories across a range of science disciplines. This position works closely with the current Instructional Support Associate and Science Department faculty to ensure effective and safe delivery of lab-based instruction.
The primary responsibility of this position is to assist the current Instructional Support Associate in supporting undergraduate science teaching laboratories across all stages of instruction. Specific lab courses include general chemistry, organic chemistry, environmental chemistry, general biology, environmental science, geology, oceanography and independent research.
Specific Duties Include:
- Assist in preparing laboratory materials, including setup of equipment and preparation of chemical solutions for instructional labs
- Provide in-laboratory support during scheduled teaching sessions as needed
- Help maintain laboratory organization, safety, and chemical hygiene standards in compliance with institutional and regulatory guidelines
- Help manage inventory, order laboratory supplies, and coordinate procurement processes
- Perform routine maintenance of laboratory equipment and arrange for repairs when needed
- Help oversee the proper storage, handling, and disposal of chemical waste in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations
- Help maintain accurate Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and chemical inventory records
- Assist in training and supervising student laboratory assistants
- Support faculty and students engaged in laboratory-based coursework and independent research
Additional Duties as Needed:
- Proctor exams
- Prepare classroom demonstrations
- Place work orders for the department
- Assist with visiting student groups and professionals and community STEM events
- Assist the Administrative Assistant in their absence and at high workload times
Job Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, environmental science, or a related scientific field
- Demonstrated laboratory experience (academic or professional)
- Knowledge of basic laboratory safety procedures and chemical handling
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and support concurrent laboratory courses
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience supporting teaching laboratories in an academic setting
- Experience with analytical equipment such as mass spectroscopy and spectrophotometry
- Experience with hazardous waste handling
- Experience working with or supervising students
Additional Information:
Classification: The Instructional Support Associate is a full-time calendar year UUP position. The anticipated salary will be $60,000.00 to $70,000.00 inclusive of an outstanding benefits package (for more information, please see the UUP-FT-Benefits-at-a-Glance.pdf). Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. Review of applications will commence immediately and conclude when the position is filled.
Special Notes: Fair Labor Standard Acts (FLSA) Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external searches to occur simultaneously.
