About Us

Founded in 1876, The Boys’ Club of New York (BCNY) is a youth development organization with the mission to empower boys and young men, ages 7 to 21, by providing effective programs and a supportive community. BCNY provides evidence-based programs to address the evolving social, emotional, health, creative, educational, and vocational needs of our members in meaningful, lasting ways. BCNY develops programs to cultivate positive qualities in members and strives to continually deepen and broaden our impact.

Job Summary

The Media Instructor is responsible for designing and facilitating engaging, age-appropriate media programming for BCNY members. The instructor will introduce young people to various forms of digital media and creative expression, including photography, videography, video editing, podcasting, digital storytelling, graphic design, and content creation.

The Media Instructor should combine technical knowledge with strong youth-development practices, creating an environment where members can explore their creativity, develop new skills, collaborate with peers, and complete meaningful projects.

This position requires an instructor who can make media accessible and exciting for beginners while providing more advanced opportunities for members who demonstrate greater interest and ability.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of a group of 10-21 boys (ages 10-12 or 13-21)

  • Develop and facilitate an engaging, age-appropriate podcasting program for BCNY members.

  • Teach members the fundamentals of podcast production, including concept development, storytelling, interviewing, script writing, recording, editing, and presentation.

  • Guide members through the full podcast production process from initial idea to completed episode.

  • Teach members how to develop podcast topics, episode themes, interview questions, segments, and show formats.

  • Help members strengthen their communication, public speaking, active listening, interviewing, and storytelling skills.

  • Teach proper use of microphones, headphones, audio interfaces, recording equipment, computers, and podcasting software.

  • Provide hands-on instruction in audio recording, editing, mixing, sound quality, music/sound effects, and basic post-production.

  • Teach members how to conduct thoughtful and professional interviews with peers, staff, community leaders, professionals, alumni, and other appropriate guests.

  • Help members develop confidence speaking on microphone and expressing their ideas and perspectives.

  • Establish production roles for members, including host, co-host, producer, researcher, writer, interviewer, audio engineer, and editor, allowing members to explore different aspects of media production.

  • Create opportunities for members to produce individual and collaborative podcast projects.

  • Develop a consistent production schedule with clear expectations for planning, recording, editing, and completing episodes.

  • Facilitate brainstorming and pre-production sessions that help members turn ideas into organized podcast episodes.

  • Support members in researching topics and preparing for interviews and discussions.

  • Teach members how to communicate differing perspectives respectfully and engage in productive conversations.

  • Encourage authentic youth voice while ensuring content remains appropriate and aligned with BCNY's mission and standards.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience in youth development, education, or afterschool

  • Previous experience in podcasting, audio production, digital media, broadcasting, journalism, communications, or content creation.

  • Experience working with youth in an educational, afterschool, community-based, mentoring, or youth-development setting.

  • Working knowledge of the podcast production process, including pre-production, recording, editing, and post-production.

  • Experience using microphones, audio interfaces, headphones, computers, and other podcast/audio recording equipment.

  • Familiarity with audio-editing software such as Adobe Audition, Audacity, GarageBand, Logic Pro, Pro Tools, or comparable platforms.

  • Ability to teach podcasting concepts in an engaging and age-appropriate manner.

  • Strong communication, storytelling, interviewing, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to develop structured lessons and guide members from an initial concept through a completed podcast episode.

  • Ability to manage groups of young people while maintaining a safe, creative, and productive studio environment.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build positive relationships with youth.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with other instructors, program staff, and clubhouse leadership.

  • Understanding of appropriate digital citizenship, copyright, privacy, consent, and responsible media practices when working with minors.

  • Associate's or bachelor's degree in Media, Communications, Journalism, Broadcasting, Film, Audio Production, Education, or a related field.

  • Professional or independent experience producing, hosting, editing, or managing a podcast.

  • Portfolio or examples of completed podcast, audio, interview, or digital media projects.

  • Experience teaching podcasting, media production, journalism, or storytelling to youth.

  • Experience developing interview questions, scripts, show rundowns, episode outlines, and other pre-production materials.

  • Knowledge of publishing and distributing podcasts through digital platforms.

  • Experience with basic photography, videography, graphic design, or social media content creation is a plus.

  • Knowledge of youth development principles, positive behavior management, and project-based learning.

Ideal Candidate

  • The ideal candidate is a creative media professional who can also teach. They should be comfortable moving between the technical and developmental sides of the position—setting up microphones and editing audio while also helping a young person find their voice, develop an interview question, tell a compelling story, and gain confidence speaking publicly.
