Job Description

Position Title: CAD Technician I

Entry-Level CAD Technician

Position Summary

  • The Entry-Level CAD Technician supports the engineering and design team by preparing, editing, and organizing civil engineering drawings under the direction of CAD Designers, Senior CAD Designers, Project Managers, and Engineers. This position is intended for someone who is developing technical drafting skills and learning company standards, Civil 3D workflows, plan production, and the basics of civil site design.
  • The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, willing to learn, comfortable following instructions, and interested in growing into a CAD Designer role.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Prepare and revise civil engineering drawings using AutoCAD and Civil 3D and assist with basic plan production for land development, utility, roadway, grading, drainage, and site construction plans.
  • Set up sheets, viewports, title blocks, xrefs, layers, labels, and basic annotation and make redline corrections from engineers, designers, and project managers.
  • Perform basic drafting tasks such as linework cleanup, labeling, hatching, dimensioning, and sheet coordination.
  • Assist with plotting, PDF creation, and assembling construction plan sets.
  • Support designers with quantity takeoffs, exhibit preparation, and simple design-related tasks.
  • Learn and follow company file naming, folder structure, layer standards, plotting standards, and Civil 3D styles and maintain drawing organization according to company CAD standards.
  • Communicate clearly when instructions are unclear or when conflicts are found in drawings.

Typical Tasks

  • Drafting existing conditions linework from survey base files.
  • Cleaning up survey drawings for use in design plans.
  • Adding labels, notes, legends, and details.
  • Updating plan sheets based on markups.
  • Preparing simple exhibits for clients, permitting, or internal review.
  • Assisting with sheet setup and plan organization.
  • Checking plotted sheets for missing xrefs, viewport issues, scale problems, or plotting errors.

Required Qualifications

  • Basic knowledge of AutoCAD.
  • Ability to read and follow written or verbal instructions.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Willingness to learn civil engineering drafting standards.
  • Basic computer and file management skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Good communication and organization skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Exposure to AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Technical school, drafting certificate, associate degree, or related coursework.
  • Familiarity with civil engineering plans, survey drawings, or construction documents.
  • Basic understanding of layers, xrefs, annotation scales, plotting, and sheet setup.
  • Interest in land development, site design, utilities, drainage, or transportation design.

Experience Level

  • 0–2 years of CAD drafting experience.
  • Suitable for recent graduates, interns, junior drafters, or candidates transitioning into civil CAD.
