Electrical Technician Apprentice
Location: Ave Maria, FL

Immediate available opening for a full-time Electrical Technician Apprentice with Peninsula Improvement Corp., d/b/a Ave Maria Utility Company, a Barron Collier Company.

Job Summary: Programs and maintains electrical, controls, instrumentation, and equipment associated with water/wastewater/irrigation operations. Maintains the integrity and safety of the extensive electrical, telemetry and instrumentation equipment related to the water or wastewater divisions. Oversees the installation of new telemetry equipment. Performs various tasks involving maintenance of utility systems, equipment, and facilities in water/wastewater. Performs other related duties as required.

SPECIFIC JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES - ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Advanced ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, P&IDs, and wiring diagrams and schematics. Proficiency in using precision testing equipment like multimeters and ohmmeters.
  • Coordinates daily work activities; organizes, prioritizes, and assigns work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; confers with assigned staff, assists with complex/problem situations, and provides technical expertise.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures; ensures adherence to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations; reviews and updates standards for water/wastewater/irrigation, instrumentation, telemetry, and electrical equipment.
  • Performs specialized electrical work associated with installation, programming, and repair of equipment/machinery at water/wastewater facilities, off-site operations, and related facilities.
  • Installs, programs, calibrates, and/or repairs a variety of instrumentation and electronic equipment, which may include variable frequency drives, flow meters, transducers, generators, transfer switches, programmable logic controls, integrated controls, motor control panels, electrical services, branch circuits, sub-feeders, lift station panels, data flow systems, SCADA, or antennas.
  • Operates telemetry systems to program, monitor, and control stations and facilities; troubleshoots telemetry computer problems; troubleshoots stations and facilities; programs lift station configuration; designs and builds electrical controls; builds screens and control logic; generates trend data and reports; modifies configuration of external hardware; calculates electrical loads lift stations.
  • Reviews, oversees, and inspects all projects with electrical controls; inspects new facilities to ensure compliance with codes and regulations.
  • Performs installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical/electronic equipment and mechanical equipment; builds, installs, and repairs equipment; repairs motors and meters; troubleshoots flow/plumbing problems; installs drive parts; installs and repairs pumps; wires control panels; repairs electrical/electronic equipment; performs preventive maintenance work according to schedule; assists with trenching for installation and repair of conduits; assists in installing pump cords and floats.
  • Provides installation, repair and troubleshooting of SCADA network components, radio telemetry systems, programmable logic controllers, troubleshoots and corrects major system failures involving instrumentation and telemetry equipment; troubleshoots and modifies computer programs for programmable logic controllers and graphical interface software; supervises and monitors installation and repair work performed by contracted service providers.
  • Assists in developing and implementing long and short-term plans, goals, and objectives; evaluates efficiency and effectiveness of operations, methods, procedures, and use of resources; implements improvements as needed.
  • Operates various equipment and tools associated with work activities.
  • Performs general/preventive maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, building, equipment, and tools in operable condition; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
  • Communicates with supervisor, employees, other Divisions, engineers, contractors, utility companies, vendors, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
  • Maintains an awareness of new technologies, methods, trends, and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; maintains professional affiliations; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate.
  • Abides by all regulations, policies, work procedures and instructions. Follows all safety rules and makes use of appropriate safety equipment.
  • Participates and attends staff meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

PHYSICALS DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Employee will be working 50% indoors and 50% outdoors.

  • The work is a hybrid of field and office time and typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee may climb ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
  • The work is largely performed in active construction sites with all associated hazards to include uneven ground, limited line of sight, confined spaces and the presence of heavy equipment.
  • The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. Work requires the use of personal protective devices such as hard hats, safety shoes, hi-visibility clothing, masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

MINIMUM QULIFICATIONS:

  • Competency in basic mathematical calculations, strong foundation of electrical theory, engineered plan reading, electrical drawings and schematics, and the use of measurement tools and computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • Ability to accurately document, compile and retrieve project information in an organized manner.
  • Comfort level with and ability to work safely in and around active construction sites.
  • Ability to derive decisions using standard documents and industry reference texts.
  • Comfort level in interacting effectively with customers, contractors, builders, and the public.
  • Ability to monitor work objectively to ensure adherence to utility standards of construction.
  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship, military training, or having had a similar position for two to four years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Florida for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • May require other certification or licensing based on area of assignment.

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS/JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

  • A High School Diploma or equivalent; vocational training, an associate’s degree, or relevant military experience is strongly preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record.

EXPERIENCE/ MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Two to four years previous experience and/or training in related field is required.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and ability to learn a variety of specialized tools used for processing Dig Tickets and utility requests.
  • Ability to read construction drawings is a must.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and organizational/administrative skills are a must.
  • Excellent sense of personal accountability.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to make critical decisions.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
