The Director, Environmental Health & Safety Operations (EHSO) provides enterprise leadership for safety strategy, regulatory compliance, and risk mitigation across all operations, including production, transportation, and support functions. This role is responsible for building a proactive, behavior-based safety culture, reducing workplace incidents, and aligning safety initiatives with operational excellence.

The Director partners closely with Operations leadership while maintaining strong collaboration with HR for compliance, workers’ compensation, and employee relations integration.

Key Responsibilities

1. Enterprise Safety Strategy & Culture

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive EHS strategy aligned with business growth and operational goals
  • Lead transformation to a behavior-based safety culture (focus on unsafe actions vs. only conditions)
  • Establish leading and lagging safetyindicators,drive accountability at all levels
  • Serve as executive sponsor for safety culture initiatives across all facilities

2. Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management

  • Ensure compliance with all OSHA, DOT, EPA, and applicable regulatory requirements
  • Serve as primary liaison with regulatory agencies and external auditors
  • Lead enterprise risk assessments and mitigation planning
  • Standardize safety policies, procedures, and audit processes across sites

3. Incident Prevention, Investigation & Analytics

  • Oversee incident investigation processes with emphasis on root cause and behavioral drivers
  • Analyze trends and deploy corrective and preventive actions
  • Implement data-driven safety reporting dashboards and KPIs
  • Partner with HR and WC leadership on injury management and claim reduction strategies

4. Safety Operations & Field Execution

  • Lead and develop a multi-site safety team (Plant Safety, Transportation Safety, Specialists)
  • Ensure consistent execution of safety programs acrossall facilitiesand Transportation
  • Conduct regular site visits, audits, and leadership safety reviews
  • Align safety practices with production realities (24/7 operations)

5. Training & Leadership Enablement

  • Partner with T&OD (Training & Leadership Development) to embed safety into onboarding and leadership training
  • Develop supervisor capability in hazard recognition, coaching, and accountability
  • Ensure all required certifications and safety training programs aremaintainedand effective

6. Cross-Functional Integration

  • Partner with:
  • Operations (primary alignment in new structure)
  • HR (LOA/WC, HRBP team) for injury management and compliance
  • Total Rewards on cost containment (claims, insurance impact)
  • Support enterprise initiatives such as automation, new facility design, and process changes

Leadership & Team Structure

  • Direct oversight:
  • Sr. Safety Manager
  • Safety Manager, Transportation
  • Safety Specialist(s)
  • Responsible for building scalable structure as organization grows

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in safety, Environmental Health, or related field
  • 8–12+ years of progressive EHS leadership experience (multi-site manufacturing preferred)
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) strongly preferred
  • Experience in food manufacturing/poultry or similar high-risk environments preferred
  • Demonstrated success driving culture change and incident reduction
